Just wanted to know if there's any way of getting rid of all those metres of cable that aren't used without trashing it permanently.

Those are all making the assumption that you're only needing to power the Zumo. Listening to any output via Bluetooth or making do without. If like me you connect via wire to an intercom and also have a traffic receiver hooked up (yeah, I know... but I had it kicking around) then opening up the cradle and shortening from that end does make sense.
