skype will work. Get a usb compatible phone (ipevo free-1 here, driver is a bit crappy, but works).

Video for mac in skype isn't there, only iChat/iSight or some 3rd party usb webcams via 3rd part drivers. iSights come up on ebay a lot. They're very good cameras, and firewire so no dropped frames etc. usually.

If you get an isight it has built in mic so you can just talk to your system fine with skype using it's mic.

I'm assuming you have an iSight camera?

Does it work with MSN messenger? or Yahoo IM?

People I want to keep in touch with are PC users....

 All you smugger than smug Mac users keep going on about how superior they are

The reason that there aren't many Virii for Mac's is 'cos no bugger wants to use them.....Skype is potentially a real 'killer app' yet Mac's don't suport webcams?? what a load of old arse biscuits :D

Get with the 21st century...get a PC :thumb

not biting...

Skype is good, but I think the future is really SIP compatible phones hung off your router. Skype is closed code (so no idea what it's *really* doing), and it needs to use somebody elses pc as relay for session setup if you have a firewall. If you dont then there's a good chance you'll end up a supernode doing lookups for a lot of other folk. SIP is an open ratified standard, and as long as they keep the off-ip billing reasonable deserves to win a lot of customers.

There's going to be a lot of investment in the technology that lets you wander about with a wireless phone in your house, up the road, anywhere and have all the traffic going over ip. BT are already rolling out their Home Hub solution for example.

The other problem with skype is folks ringing when it's not convenient, and it 'taking over' the desktop. I can never remember to switch it to DND, and it's harder to ignore than a phone that will flip to voicemail.

I'm watching you sonny:-

Yawn... have you ever used one? Probably not, if you want to communicate with PC users (if their PC's haven't crashed) you can use Mercury Messenger, do a Google search for the address. It works with an MSN name. Or convince your mates to get Macs and use iChat. As far as webcams, iSight is best, there are lots of cheap, tacky, badly designed ones made for PC's but generally false economy, a bit like PC's really.
