Ardennes region,France& Belgium

Folks me and a few mates are heading over to the Ardennes region for the August bank holiday weekend. Can anyone recommend any good routes around the area. Also any must see places of interest

Search "Ardennes" on here and you'll find loads of info.

There are some lovely roads, anywhere South of Dinant, basically. Unlike this country where the occasional decent roads is notworthy are identifiable, pretty much anywhere in the mountain area will be lovely.

My favourite little area is to the East of Montherme, Along the Semois river, in the little bit of France that sticks up into the Ardennes.

Anywhere round Spa Francorchampos will be nice, and there might be something worth watching at the circuit.

The highest point in Belgium is Haute Fagne, which has a very fast road up to it!

Luxembourg is a funny old place, but also full of lovely roads away from Luxembourg City. Diekirch is a nice town to stay in.

Finally, the key word in NeilDD's post is "waterproof."

Dont tell to many people about Belgium its an undiscovered gem normally blasted on the way to somewhere else.

I'm actually doing a weekend in the Ardennes the July 16, 17. I found two routes, one a loop of about 175km around la Roche en Ardenne and the other around Spa and Francorchamps, in a Belgian touring mag and will post them if they are any good.

the area around Bastogne is full of military memorials and sites of interest,if you want a structure then you can follow the story of the Battle of the Bulge as it effected the soldiers in the Band of Brothers (Easy Company 101st Airborne) Vianden in Luxembourg is well worth a visit, and if you nose around a bit there are some surprisingly good roads there is also a big US military Cemetery near the airport at Sandweiler where George Patton is buried.

that map is out of stock, have been trying to get one from stanfords for a month now, they are still waiting for them. heading off tomorrow to the ardennes so if i find anything not covered in richards posts, i will post up.

I have the tunnel booked for myself and a couple of friends on the 19th for a long weekend.

Originally we were going to spend the first night in Bruges, the second in Arnhem and the final night in Dinant. The mileage between stops is deliberately pretty low to try and allow a fair bit of flexibility.

Anyway, I have taken delivery of the Michelin maps and it would appear that it might make more sense to miss out Bruges, go straight to Arnhem and then spend two nights in Dinant - judging by the number of scenic routes in the area.


Looks like there is plenty to see between Dinant-Liege-Bastogne, and we will have time to do the Bouillon-Montherme bit on the way back to the tunnel.

So should I concentrate on this area or look at another night somewhere else? One of the lads is keen on going to the Eiffel Mountains, I just don't want to miss out on some cracking riding in one place just because we are in a rush to get somewhere else.

Any advice would be much appreciated. (Happy to do around 300 miles a day, but would rather do 200-250 quality miles a day)

Your revised plan looks fine. Miss out visiting Bruges if you want to ride roads; it will still be there another day.
