Are adventure type tyres stiffer than road tyres?

Just a thought.....I find the initial impact when riding over pot holes and the like quite bad even though my Rallye has the latest full suspension package (which is great AFTER the event) so I was wondering if adventure type tyres e.g. Michelin Anakee 3, have a stiffer side wall built into them to handle the harder impacts expected off road and if so would a pure road tyre give a better/more comfortable ride in similar conditions?
If the answer is yes, could anyone point me in the direction of such a tyre on a GS they would recommend for road use only?
Thanks.
PS. Yes I did search in the multitude of tyre posts but this point is different.

The must have road tyre of the moment seems to be the Metzler Roadtec 01

I just put the Roadtecs on my GS. The Anakees it came with were only 2700 miles old, but I was concerned they might be worn out while away on a long tour where I expect to cover about 3000 miles. I would say they are no less stiff than the Anakees, if anything they initially felt a little stiffer as they make the steering lighter and the front has a slightly over-inflated feel to it. I'm getting used to them now, though I did drop the front pressure from 36 to 34. They were excellent while doing 100 miles out in the rain today and felt totally secure, didn't even slip on cats eyes while changing lanes, which some tyres do slightly even in the dry. I wouldn't choose to ride in the rain but I had to go over to the dealer in Peterborough to get the fork fix done before my big trip.

I have just gone from Anakees to roadtec, can't say that I can feel any difference in ride quality/ comfort. I could not feel any difference between the PR4 GT or trail .
Any one of the latest trail or sports touring tyres will do the job quite nicely, they only show up any difference if pushed really hard, Just pick your favorite colour and enjoy.

Fred, I have to take mine in to get the steering lock sorted next week, and Balderstons told me that they didn't have the parts for the forks fix, not that I'm in any rush as mine have no gaps. Have yours been done?

Replaced my Anakees, for much the same reason as Fred, with Roadsmart 3s; FWIW I reckon they are actually slightly stiffer.

Mine were done today, though I had a bit of a wet ride there and back. I rang a couple of weeks ago and explained that I was doing a long trip and would feel happier getting the fix done before I go. Mine had no gaps either, but I think if a gap develops you are not supposed to keep riding the bike, which could be a bit inconvenient in the middle of a long trip! They said all the parts they had at the time were already committed but they would be getting more in so could do mine on the 26th.

I rang yesterday to check that they had received the parts, which they had, but asked if I could come a different day given the weather forecast for today. They said no because they are not allowed to reserve these parts, so it is first come first served which seems odd as they have to book people in for the work which must mean reserving the bits for them to some extent. Anyway, I was just pleased to get it done.

Did you find out what is causing the problem with your steering lock, or are they going to investigate and replace if required. Could be a bit of a problem if part of the frame needs to be replaced!

Enjoy your trip Fred. Next week's visit will just be to check what's wrong. I'll be needing a service next month so this way they can order in anything that's needed. The steering lock solenoid just chatters away and then goes back to unlocked.

Thanks. Hopefully just a faulty solenoid then. Maybe just failing to latch in the locked position and being repeatedly pushed back by a spring each time it tries.

Compared with standard road tyre I would say yes, the guy who changes my tyres always struggles doing the Anakees and he says the side walls are very stiff!

Adventure versions of road tyres are probably just as bad as they are usually different versions of those tyres. Makes sense really due to what they are designed for.

Tyres do tend to soften a little with use, so a new tyre will be stiffer than one which is well used.
