Arrrrggghh, my new GS is rusty!!!

Bought my new GS in September last year - brilliant bike, lots of fun & no complaints...............until, after 1800 miles, a small patch of paint on the sub-frame had rubbed off and has now been replaced by rust.

Now it's obvious from where the affected area is that my boot is to blame, but as I ride on the balls of my feet, contact with the sub-frame is occasional at best. My boot does not constantly rub on the area.

Took the bike back to the dealers who reported to BMW. The answer was: "not a warranty issue, it's your fault". OK, I didn't want the sub-frame replacing but for a £10 grand bike, I'm surprised that the paintwork has waved the white flag so quickly, so I've asked the dealers if they would repair the damage at their cost for the sake of customer goodwill. Not on yer nelly came the response.

Has any one else had a similar problem and if so, how was it resolved? Cheers!

auto glim do a car polish which has a rust inhibitor it's really good just monitor it and give it the magic once over ever few months... that's all i do and mine got dents and scracthes all over it...

As far as dealer is concerned, YOU wore the paint away, it didn't just fall off.

Sand back the area & wipe away sanding dust, clean and degrease, mask off surrounding area, purchase a can of Smoothrite spray in gloss black.

Jobs a good-un.

and maybe cover the affected area with clear sticky back plastic (yes I was brought up on 'Blue Peter'.

Don't Wunderlich sell a frame cover to protect the paint if your boots come into contact with the frame (fortunately mine don't seem to)

I had worn the paint quite a bit on my HP2 on the left hand side in under 250 miles, the frame does have some clear plastic over it but not quite in the right place...

The HG shop in Peterborough does 'Oxford paint saver' - a very thick clear sticky back plastic in a huge roll for about 15 quid and this is ideal for such areas, just rub it down, paint, stick a bit on and get going again.

I got mine for my shiny new fork legs on my Adventure but it has a myriad of uses

Clear "fablon" costs feck all and does the same thing. I use it to stop me legs buffing paint off the tank as well. Whats left over backs the kids school books

Got the same bit of paint missing just ACF50 it and ride the bike, if it really bugs you there is a TT strap on bit that covers and protects that part of the frame.

mine hasdone the same, going to re-paint it and make some stainless frame guards. They will hopefully be some photos in technical soon.

if it is where your foot has worn away the paint, with constant contact the rust shouldnt have chance to develop intoo anything deeper, i would have thought that every time you ride the bike your foot will rub the rust off.
i have similar patches on my frame that are just polished metal.
Just think of the hard core look

S'obvious innit? Only 1800 miles since last September? You're not riding it enough! Now if you ride it every day like wot you should do, then the area that you rubbed the paint off would stay nice 'n shiny!!!! Sorted!

Nice one longdog - you're right, get on the bike more and as Atkule says, don't bother looking at it. Sanding off, repaint and then Blue Peter (down Shep) clear sticky back plastic is the answer! Thanks everyone who responded and I'll check out the discussion as suggested Shaun.

Yes same problem. Not convinced it's my boots though, more like the constand wear from my cordura trousers flapping in the breeze. Painted it with silver smoothrite and then cable tied a small piece of clear thin plastic to the frame. Job done
