yes, I am new here but I know I want one!

In fact I am about to order a brand new 1200 GSA. Now I know pretty much what extras I want but what about ASC? New models will ship with this optional extra but is it worth it? And what does it actually do? Apparently it stands for Automatic Stability Control and it promises to do something about the power delivery to the rear wheel when the shit hits the fan. Is this really necessary though? And wouldn't ASC stop you from doing a wheelie? Couldn't have that obviously...

Extracted from the BMW website:
This system serving to control drive spin on a production motorcycles is being introduced as an optional extra on the touring models in the BMW K and Boxer Series.......Once again, therefore, BMW is acting as the pioneer in the introduction of advanced safety technologies on the motorcycle. This further enhances the leadership which BMW Motorrad has shown in the area of active safety for more than 15 years.

Except this is complete bollox - I've had traction control on my Honda Pan European ST1100a for the last 8 years - and it is brilliant. When the rear of the bike starts to slip the system cuts the power - like ABS in reverse. It has actually got me off a muddy verge where the bike sank about 4 inches into the mud and also saved me from a nasty off when I hit some leaves on a damp bend!

But well done BMW for doing it anyway - I'm hoping for stabiliser wheels next!

As for wheelies, you can always switch the system off :bounce1

I've ordered the ASC option on my (march 1st) GSA and asume as Perryhill says, its a form of Traction Control.

TBH after the cost of the bike it is not a major cost option, and if required I understand it can be turned off.

Necessary ? Lets hope not !!!
