Attention 2010+ DOHC owners

This will do away with the daft exhaust valve, which serves no purpose apart from noise suppression.

I think this gadget has more to do with emission restrictions to get through EU regulations.....which does raise the point raised by an earlier post....does removing it cause problems come mot time?...it's going to be at least 2/2.5 years before most will find out.

...but I'm a mechanical numpty, but more experienced mechanics will probably know now.

Dunno about the flap on GS's as I don't have one but ..... had one on my GSXR and took it off. It's a common mod as the consensus is the midrange is improved contrary to Suzuki's claims. The general belief is they fit them to quietent down the noise at the rpm where the type approval tests are done and the marketing departments just say it's to improve midrange. After removing the noise increase was barely noticeable and it certainly didn't feel like it reduced power, my perception was it revved slightly freer and just felt a bit more eager.

Well I've had mine disconnected a few days now... some observations:

Mid rang is much more responsive, bike feels more "eager" above 4.5krpm now (might just be me) :weights:
It pops and farts a hell of alot more now when engine braking :mcgun:
Fuel economy according to the display, has dropped about 5mpg... although, might be linked to me riding it a bit harder with the mid-range response being improved :pissl
Also, does sound a little louder at higher revs!

Just my 2 pence...

Interesting this as mine seems sluggish to start despite being on an optimate all winter and the battery showing as fine.

Mine sometimes 'beeps' when I turn on the ignition  First time it did it I turned on the key and could hear a quiet regular beep somewhere that sounded like an error warning and it sems to come from the exhaust valve area (although I don't think there are any electronics there?). Anyway turn the ignition off and back on and it goes away but I wonder if it's sticking? :nenau

Easy to see if its working or not

Bloody hell, didn't know I had a sodding great flap like that shoved up me pipe. I knew it was there, I just thought that it would have been a little more subtle than that.

I think I may be disconnecting that then. I assume BMW wont mind as it has nothing to do with the fuelling, just the emissions.....

Great demo Kenny.. :thumb2

My local BMW dealer even told me how to do it :thumb2

Cool, in that case, what are you supposed to do with the cables. Just tie them up somewhere out of the way?

I just removed the black cover on the valve (see where the cables are in that vid) and just detached them from the wheel. The cables stay in-situ as they are, but the ends of the bowden cable just 'hang loose' inside (I just fed them behind the part the slotted in to, so they just tickle the spring underneath it), re-attach the black cover and that works fine :)

That way, looks just as if it's still connected, but in actual fact it's not!

Also, when you do detach the bowden cables, turn the valve as far anti-clockwise as it will go, that way it's fully open. The spring will keep it from closing shut too which is nice :)

Thanks for the useful posts. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with fuel consumption over time. Thanks :beerjug:

Yes and no.

The pre 2010 exhaust muffler/can will not fit the standard headers.
But you can still fit 2008/9 spec Remus headers and a Remus/Akra/Boss etc..muffler combo.

Thanks - I have the complete remus headers, hexacon muffler off my 08 GSA. I wanted to swap it over to the 10 model but the shop said it would not fit. I also had this from others. It would be great and a lot cheaper than buying new but dont want to take the system to bits with so many experts saying 08 exhaust system won't fit.

Geezer; Thanks - I have the complete remus headers said:
GEEZER ring your dealer up and yell em there talking b0llox! here a pic with 2008 full system on my 2010 bike and it fits 100% perfect.

Update: my bike went in for its 6k service today and I had the servo baffle unit (the motor not the flap) thingy replaced today under warranty. I'm still the first and only unit they have replaced so far. I asked if they could disconnect it altogether and was told it wouldn't be a good idea given that the spring is not that strong and under heavy exhaust pressure the baffle will "swing in the wind". Also they said that over a prolong period the computer will start to get errors if it senses the the pressure is different from spec. They hadn't seen a 2010 bike with an aftermarket exhaust so couldn't comment. Bike running great now.

2010 and 7000 miles. i still hear a distinctive open and close at turn of the key. and a lovely growl when throttle opewned, especially when in higher gear - as in torque....

Looking forward to putting more miles on mine(only 1350), sounds great under load and I like the wee 'popping burble' when you shut the throttle quickly in first or second gear.........!
