August Bank Holiday Ideas

I’ve got the August bank holiday free to enjoy the bike. Ferry’s look stupid expensive so unless there’s a last minute discount I think that’s Europe out which is a shame as I really enjoyed my Normandy trip in May.

I’m based in Cirencester so Wales is always an easy option but not very inventive.

Cornwall is an option but I have been down there before.

Lake District is on my radar and I’ve never done that on a bike.

Any other, more imaginative, options that I’m not thinking of? I can leave home mid afternoon on Friday and don’t mind getting home late on Monday (works well for Caen ferry).

Just a thought but Newhaven - Dieppe still has space and is less than £100 return which is pretty cheap as ferries go especially for August? Then explore NE France ?
 
I would not go to the Lake District in school hols. It's a May or September type of place.

Just south of there is the Forest of Bowland. I've stayed in Long Preston, Longridge and Clitheroe before. Dales nearby for daytrips. Some years ago and B&B prices seem a tad higher now! Sadly the excellent Boar's Head in Long Preston is no longer open. As is Ferrari's at Longridge (being refurbished). Can't remember where I stayed in Clitheroe as over 10 years ago.

That’s tempting, shame the afternoon ferry on the Monday is full but I could do a south coast explore to wind my way home

Good call. Yorkshire Dales are somewhere else I haven’t explored either

The Boars head isn’t open but the bloke that had it now has the Maypole across the road. Malham isn’t far from there and has the lovely Listers Arms for accommodation.

Reeth is a good base in the Dales. I've stayed in the Black Bull and Kings Arms and would stay again. Salty B&B prices though in peak season. I daren't look to see what the Lister Arms in Malham is charging. Stayed there a long time ago.

@Doc was in Malham recently, Buck Inn I think. He liked it. 27 pages on the subject somewhere here.

hopefully he still has Timmy Talylor's Landlord and a big log fire like in the BH. It pissed down as I went through the Trough so was glad to see the fire when I got there.

Stayed in the Lister's Arms, as mentioned above. Some time ago, I guess it is a bit spendy now as it was not cheap a decade ago.

It’s probably around a decade ago that we stayed at the Listers and as you say it wasn’t cheap. Settle will have cheaper accommodation and if one wants there’s always the hotel Paradiso at the Helwith Bridge inn. 😂😂😂. As kids we were through the trough at least once a month to visit grandad in Lancaster where he moved after living in Hellifield for most of his life. He worked on steam trains out of Hellifield. That’s where my dad’s family was from.
 
Reeth looks promising, there’s a campsite on the edge of town which makes walking to dinner & a drink easy

Last time I stayed in Reeth I was in my motorhome and just stayed on the cobbles. It does say no camping but I did ask in the pub and the barman was of the opinion that if I wasn’t in a tent then I wasn’t camping. That was fine by me. I was meeting my brother and nephew were walking the inns way. So a good night was had by all.
 
If you go through Bowland, make sure you ride Moor Cock, south of Bentham.

It always amuses me when that name pops up on the sat nav as you ride down to Slaidburn. My internal monologue has a predictable response ...
