Autocom and Ultimate Ears

Hi

I had been waiting for the new Autocom models being launched to fit to my recent new GSA but have just been told on the phone by a guy at Autocom that these won't be launched until October, so probably going to have to go with the top end current model.

Can anyone tell me how an autocom unit works when using a pair of Ultimate Ears monitors and a flip front helmet? ie how / where do the Ultimate Ears plug in to the autocom? I take it you retain the mic from the autocom but do you then have two sets of leads coming from your helmet to pug in to the autocom socket on your bike?

How does it work when taking you lid on and off, how much cable is there going to them so they don't get yanked out of your ears when taking your lid off?

what you will find you need is another lead, to replace the standard autocom to helmet lead. this lead has a little junction box on it, the main cable still goes up into the helmet for the mic, the box has a 3.5 mm socket just for the lead from your ear plugs
so you do end up with more wires flapping around, but sound is better and volumes needed to hear voice/music will no longer be so potentially damaging to hearing.
ps you will find that this lead is not a trivial expense

The converter cable is part 1187 I think. There is however, to my mind, a more elegant solution. Autocom will make up for about £25, a helmet harness without speakers but with a 3.5mm stereo plug in their place. You have to use your original mic on the new harness - so you just plug your UE cable into it. It hangs just a few centimeteres below your helmet so you can order your UE cable about 15 cms long - a right angle plug makes it even neater.

As I don't listen to music I just have a monitor in my left ear and a foam one in the other - it works just fine

So the proceedure is to fit the UE plug, don helmet and then insert the 3.5 jack into the Autocom plug - this is done easily by feel even with gloves on. Of course, remembering to uncouple the plug before removing the helmet is essential!!

Not really recommended as we always add parts onto our headsets/leads to govern the incoming volume as the in-ear speakers vary on volumes.

To concur with what Rich has just said at UE we used to provide an inline volume control which the monitors interfaced with direct into the Autocom headset loom - we no longer offer this set-up for use with Autocom systems.

As Autocom dealers we have worked with them to produce an 'Ultimate' version of their systems, which includes within it the correct headset and loom minus the speakers plus a headset extension lead with jack plug socket for the monitors EL-7EP (part 1187) instead of the regular headset lead (EL-7 part 1179.

And as I understand it this is sold at the same price as the regular Autocom kits, as opposed to buying the standard kit with the wrong loom (I get confused with which loom goes with which system so no part no's here , I think I need a training day in Warwick), cutting the speakers off as they're no longer on a plug/socket arrangement and paying another £20 for the part 1187 (or £25 for the coiled 1188).

Just a thought, but why can't autocom market earmoulds with dual earpiece transducers and boom mike. Just like the genesis 2 headsets from Sonics. ?

I explored this option a while back but the price of the headset and also the fact they can't or won't change the connector plug to the 5/7 din plug connector put me off.
