Autocom Issue

Just bought my first 1200GS (08 model). Just wonderin if anyone has fitted an autocom, and if so, where did you mount it? Didn't really want to use the tool kit tray, but the space underneath it doesn't seem quite big enough.
Also, is it ok to pick up a power supply off the back of the auxiliary socket, as this seems to switch off with the ignition. I'm just worried about upsetting the canbus wiring.
Any advice gratefully received.

My Autocom unit (Pro 7 Sport) just about fitted under the stock seat. I then got on the lathe at work and made two small seat height adjusting bars about an inch long to replace the single long adjusting bar that goes right under the seat. I'd post a picture but I'm moving house hence no camera.

This new set of seat height adjusters opened up the space under the seat nicely, allowing the Autocom to sit in there comfortably. It is important to mount the Autocom away from the battery to avoid picking up interference from the alternator (in my case via the satnav, Mp3 and mobile phone cables.)

Wiring the Autocom off the power socket is what my dealer did and it works just fine, however I seem to recall someone suggesting the feed to the rear light for some reason on the 1200GS?

Any intrepid entrepreneurs on the forum could make a few quid machining up a few sets of these seat adjusting bars.....just a thought (I'm too busy)?

I fitted my Autocom to the bracket for the handbook at the rear of the tank,I was worried about it getting soaked as there didn't seem to be much protection from the elements there but it's been fine so far. (It's attached by the velcro supplied by Autocom and is pretty secure.)
I took the power supply on a spur from the aux socket and have had no problems with that- the Zumo is also fed from the same spur..

I removed the LHS aluminium panel where you will find a space towards the rear of the petrol tank with enough room to wedge the autocom brain in. The power wires are connected to the rear of the accessory socket below the seat

Izzit no a bit of a scutter getting at the unit to adjust the VOX and stuff when it's in there

re VOX: i used the battery power supply and kept the unit in my pocket when doing the initial adjustments. Once its set up shouldnt need adjusting again unless there is a helmet or rider/pillion change

No- none.

On Fruitcakes 650 I fitted her Autocom unit in the little space right next to the battery and that works fine too

Never heard of a DC unit giving off interference, so a no.

I'm with Wully, after spending hours trying to find somewhere to put it, bit of a doh moment. I've also used velco and the band for the handbook and a fused spur straight from the battery. Bluetooth dongle under tooltray.

Not at all stupid - vehicle electrical supplies are notoriously noisey - primarily because, as already pointed out, of the alternator, but also because of any motors, and to some extent the ignition system.

I once put an aftermarket alternator in a car and it was such low quality the radio become unusuable.

Having said that, I had no problem with Autocom over battery. My Autocom is now in the tool tray, no difference in performance.
