aux lighting bars

Not such a big deal snodog, especially on a GSA. There are quick couplings on the fuel lines, so if you make sure the tank is not full (30 liters of fuel is quite heavy :weights) there's not much to it.

First you take off the seat (I'm sure you can do that).

Then you call a friend and have him take off the black plastic side panel (simply pull, no screws).

Next you ask him nicely to remove the one bolt that holds the tank on the right hand side (tools required are in the GS toolkit) and undo three quick couplings on the fuel hoses and the wire connector.

If he can lift 5-10 kg on his own, he can then take off your fuel tank. If not, give him a hand.

Finally, offer him a few beers   . Not too many, as he might not be able to help you put the thing back on then.

Now you can call another friend to watch you do the wiring. If you're installing an Autoswitch, I could send you a few pics of when I installed mine. It's quite straight forward, unless you're colour blind. Then you'll have to find a friend who's not ;).

If this sounds complicated, find a friend who'll do it all for a few beers more. Or cross the pond and make a nice trip to Belgium, I can give you a hand too.

I've got the pics, but I'll have to add some arrows and comments. Otherwise I'm afraid they're pretty useless. I'll try to find some time to do that next week-end.

We include an 8 page installation guide with all of our light kits that provides a text description, color wiring "how-to" diagrams and digital pictures from our installations that include the Autoswitch.

Email me privately if you would like a copy.

I already had this discussion with Michel. The mounting holes are different and Michel has never seen a 1100GS close up. Easiest thing would be to supply the bar with no mounting holes and then allow you to measure up and drill your own.

Regards,

Mike

Michel was round at my place yesterday and we checked the light bar on my 1100. The only difference is the mounting holes. The same width bar as the 1150 looks just fine. The 1100 holes are 18.5cm apart whilst the 1150 were 24cm. I will be fitting mine as soon as possible :D. Just need to pick out some nice lights - probably go for the Hella FF50 or FF75s.
Cheers Michel

A guy on the german boxer forum already installed the bracket on his 1100. This is what it looks like:

Ralphy, Lyjohn and myself had a wire-fest last Saturday and fitted our lasercut light bars from Michel. Ralphy got the bars black powder coated for just £6. They look fantastic.

For the wiring we used the indicator cancel autoswitch. We used two relays to wire the lights in, one for the the main beam switch and the other for the autoswitch. This means the aux lights always come on with main beam, but can also be switch on with the normal lights just by holding the indicator cancel switch for around a second. What was really interesting was that the three bikes, all bought in 2002, had completely different wiring looms. Ralph's is a late '02 model, mine is an '03 model (no headlight switch) and John's is a twinspark.

As for the lights, John chose PIAA 1250 (??) while Ralph and I put on the much cheaper Ring Ice Blue driving lamps. Either way the bikes look fantastic and are now useable at night.

Great Mike :thumb,

So my Autswitch manual was a few days late huh.

Any chance of some pics? I've never seen the bars coated.

Greetings,
Michel

Ralphy, Lyjohn & Mike:

Pity you were so far away. I had my own light-bar-fest with the crafty skills of Greg Masters as my electrical guru. We did the same: two relays; spots switched on and off independently by Autoswitch operating via Indicator Cancel button; spots always on with main beam; power off when ignition is switched off.

I didn't use the Halford Ice Blue spots even though mine look similar. Found a pair made by the same manufacturer but badged differently and slightly larger.

Simon,
Lovely - are they for the Australian Market ? ;)

No . . . but they're bat friendly (for very good reasons). Sorry folks, Malky's being very cryptic.

Hey guys,

One of the light bar "users" has found a scratch on his fork tube.

When turning fully to the left or right, and pushing the front suspension down hard, he can make the fork tube touch the light bar, apparently.

On my bike it doesn't happen, I have about 2cm clearance. Could you please check yours, and let me know if there's a problem?

Regards,
Michel

Sorry about the design foopah Migel. I'm sure with another iteration and replacement of the defective units you'll have a good product.

We designed our titanium light bar with consideration for the forks at full lock and compression to ensure that the light bar does not contact the fork tubes and the base of the large PIAA lights do not strike the top of the front fender.

The lightbar can be installed on either an R1150GS or R1100GS with a simple change of the mounting fasteners.

You might recognize this fellow forum member's GS with a Micatech light bar installed if you'd like to see our design solution:

And, an R1150GS with PIAA 910s mounted on the light bar and Sylvania HID lights installed on a Wunderlich crash bar:

I've been following this thread and cometo a conclusion that a fixed light bar across the front ,although easiest to make and fit could cause all sorts of problems in a spill, either high or low speed, let alone dropping it off the stand onto its side - duh!
Anyway- a bit of lateral thinking - why not mount spools ( round blocks) on each side fixing screw and mount independant brackets each side.
That way,if the light touches anything it'll rotate, similar to a clutch lever.
Just a thought.
