Aux sockets and Garmin

I plan to hard wire my Streetpilot III to my GS's battery

First question what size of inline fuse should I use ?

Secondly whats the colour code of the Garmin wiring on the power cable, hopefully its as simple as red n black

And while im here, on the Aux socket (and all cigar lighter type plugs) is the middle core the positive ?

Just remember that if you do hardwire it direct to the battery, it remains live at all times. In other words, if you disconnect your gps to use elsewhere, remember to insulate the gps connector or you will blow a fuse when it shorts against something. - Like mine did!

Luckily the SP3 power connector has shrouded pins so there's little chance of shorting it out.

However remember that if it's permanently live, the positive pin will tend to corrode quickly if it gets wet.

I'd suggest a 2A fuse. Sorry can't remember wire colours! If you have a continuity meter, you could check the wires on a car power lead, bearing in mind that the central pin on the ciggy lighter socket is positive.

The centre pin is positive on BMW style sockets too.

IIRC and it is a while since I looked at one I thought it was 0.5 amps. Also, IIRC as long as the fuse is less than the power rating for the cable it doesn't really matter as the fuse is only protecting the cable

If that sounds strange, what's the fuses rating for the mains lead if you have one? The 26xx desn't seem to have a fuse.

Theres no fuse on the mains lead. A google search only revealed that it uses 4.2w of power (peak)

Should think the plug would short when not in use as its shrouded, and when not in use I can tuck it in my handle bar bag

The fuses will protect the cable if it's damaged and then shorts out. In which case, having the plug in the bag be of much protection. Also IIRC the Garmin lead comes with an in-line fuse holder and fuse, which is helpful of them. I may still have one at home, and will have a look tonight.
