Auxiliary lights

Nope, have you thought about the Vision X lights from the boys at Adventure spec. They seem very effective, are small and have a very low draw. How much are the Wunderlichs?

they're about £155 for the pair, including all the mountings and switch (149euros on the german site) attach to the fork clamps, they use 55W h3 bulbs. I've seen the vision x on the adv-spec site but couldnt see a nice way to mount them on the xc, if anyone has done it i would be interested to see how

cheers

I had some very nice Twalcom spotlights. Better made than Touratech. That is to say more expensive but just as badly built as touratech. All these expensive lights have one major drawback, they all relay on the same H3 bulb as the units I now run which i got on ebay for £10 and are just as bright but are made of ABS so are more durable. They came with mounting brackets too. I even swapped out the 55w bulb for 100w just for offroad occasional use so now they're actually much better than Touratech. That cost £5 more though. I also found the expensive ones were not well made enough to warrant the price. I got rid of mine because I'm not a mug and these things took me for one.

I'm no mug either the Vision X are bloody tough and LED , they use them on rally cars , desert racers and such. They are not cheap though at £90 each but one on main or dip beam should make a big diff'.

And due to the low current draw you should be able to run quite a few without causing problems with current draw ect.

I'm still torn between the vision X and getting some micro DE's and giving them the HID treatment.....

After using HID on my 1150, i've come to the conclusion that standard bulbs are outdated....

Rushy, you're quite correct, the Vision-X are LED, and at 12v supply draw 1.5amps..... there is absolutely no way a halogen can match that performance.

Arma, I would be careful upping the wattage too, the XC uses a smaller 280watt generator than that of the 650GS/Dakar which uses a 400watt winding.

(2x100w)= 200w

200w/12v= 16.7amps

There is a good chance your over loading the system......

Mounting the HID ballasts is a pain in the ass though, there is very little room behind the XC dash facia.....

my thought was that the wunderlichs are half the price of a pair of TT units, i could then convert them to the HID35watt units from HID50.com, very small ballast that would fit (i think) behind the bracket that is used to support my headlight and technik mudguard. That setup would give something like 3000 lumen per light as opposed to the 900 lumen of the xvision.

alternatively having seen this ....

i might be tempted down that route :)

oh these long winter evenings :augie

I was thinking of something along similar lines. the standard front fender is just shocking for keeping the mud off me and the radiator, so would get some attention anyway.

I've got a spare ballast or 2 to offer up and see how it will all work....

It won't solve your mud problems but I was able to mount a slim ballast against the vertical bit of the fender above the yoke. The picture might help but isn't very clear. You can see the bottom yoke with a lock stop at the bottom of the picture

I removed the system though as it kept causing the clocks to blank when turning on the bike. I'm thinking about putting it back on at the moment though as I'm fed up of guessing where I'm going at night.

I had it driving a 35W H4 HID with the telescopic action for hi/lo. Light output was good, as was lo beam pattern. The extra light did cause some reflection patterns lighting up the rain in front of me at night which was a bit distracting. I was able to reduce this by putting some black insulating tape along the top of the headlamp glass where it curves back to meet the reflector.

Have you fitted them already then fella? . I was thinking of some early last year but work & babies meant the bike didn't get used much at all. I am going to make sure I get more miles in this coming year but I want to fix the luggage ( GL Great Basin) and possibly the poor lighting with a Vision X on dip. I'm one tooth down from stock on the front but going to go one up for longer road trips.

Yes mate, the vision-x have been on for a couple of months.
Using one flood and one spot, i used the inner clamp bolt of my barkbuster hand guards and made a 30mm long spacer out of aluminium, and with a longer M8 screw, mounted the light there.
So, quite high up and outward from the yokes by about 75mm.
Switch gear is a rocker type kill switch mounted next to the clutch lever bracket.

Any pics available please?

are you running both the flood and spot off the same switch so both on together?

Both on same switch.
The feed is fused straight from the battery, to the switch and out to the lights, with earth return to battery.
