Hi,

after a starting issue with my 07 1200gs i spoke to the dealer and they agreed to take a look ( ignition on and no response from starter, happend 3 times ), they had my bike a few days and could not find anything wrong so they stripped and cleaned the front brake to stop the annoying low speed squeel.

Picked the bike back up and rode it the hundred odd miles or so home gave it a good clean and put it in the shed and on my optimate, got it out yesterday and when hit the starter all i got was a horrible whirring/whinning noise?? gave the starter another couple of prods and the same thing happened. this was followed by a severe verbal volley which still didnt start it. I put the bike in second gear and rocked it back and forth then tried again, With sounds like a machine gun it fired up followed by a bad smell of burning:blast

Turned it off and ran for the hose pipe but the smell went away and it did not catch fire, a mate turned up and we had a look together not seeing anywhere where the smell had come from, the bike started again straight away but the starter does not sound right? Had a quick toby up the road and it ran ok then home again. But the front brake is squeeling again when stopping from low speed

spoke to dealer and they are picking it up wednesday

im thinking starter ring / motor ish?? dealer will tell mewhats wrong(i hope) and fix / change for free under warranty but some advice before hand would be great

only had it 6 months and this is the second time in as many weeks its been back to the dealers, had a look and ive done less than 2k on it and roughly 350 of that was between the dealers and home, i was tempted to tell them to keep the thing.

after owning jap bikes for years im starting to thiink ive dropped a bollock buying this........

I don't know if the starter motor casing is as easy to take off as it is on the 11xx, but if it is, whip it off........sounds like the starter got jammed and the full current frazzled the coating off the rather heavy starter cable :nenau

dealer picked bike up today, and it started straight away , right on the button with no naughty noises at all:nenau

Sod's law :blast

Still betting on the starter getting stuck......all those electric fairies then trying to escape through the starter wires.

They should find the wiring to the starter burnt, or at least a bit frazzled anyway.

The question is will they be able to find out why it stuck

I recon that some people should have a pre CBT on how to work and deal with this bikes specially if you come from east site :augie

Probably something simple.

Bad earth through starter motor body?? is it tight???

A loose starter motor could give the symptoms you describe.

i just hope its sorted finally .. its the start of the rally season for me and i am looking forward to putting some miles on it without the aching wrists, arms and neck that the last one caused (blackbird).

the gs is uber comfortable and fast enough (at sensible speeds) for what il be doing

cant tell if the starter has been tight or loose as up till it didnt start it had been fine with no abnormal noises etc, soon as the dealer gets back in touch il post what they say

Hope you get it sorted soon mate. Obviuosly didn't get it from Cooper BMW in Boldon. I'm looking at getting a GS, but reading into them, together with threads like this, I'm begining to wonder if they are as reliable etc as I'd thought. I've read about it being a must having the warranty etc, which doesn't inspire confidence in the bike.

They're not.

They're rubbish.

Go buy one of those new Triumphs.....they're far better, apparently :thumb2

Joking aside, a mate of mine has just test rode the new explorer and loved it so much he's ordered one. He test rode a GS a yr ago, but his mrs didn;t like it.

nearly bought an 800 from coopers but they didnt quite give me what i wanted so ended up getting a 1200 from alan jeffries instead .

i think every bike has its faults and gremlins, just pick a bike and search for a forum on it . maybe ive just been unlucky

i do intend to keep it for a few years otherwise i would not have splashed out on it,

the warranty side of it , i could have bought a bike from most other dealers and gotten 30 days or at a push six months warrenty some of which are not worth the paper there written on, the 12 month no quibble one with bmw is excellent

i hope once this is sorted it will be a case of....to infinity and beyond

I would rank a GS ahead of Trumpet for build quality and probably reliability.

Your average GS covers a much higher mileage than a typical jap bike so is it any wonder there are more problems reported on the forums :nenau

you don't 'need' extended warranty - I haven't bothered and still have two arms and two legs.

Ride the ferker and stop worrying - if it breaks get it fixed like anything else. You no longer pay a premium price for a basic GS (unlike years ago with the 11**) so what do people expect. Final drives still last a lot longer on average that a chain and sprockets - neither of which are cheap to fix or replace :blagblah

dealer phoned me earlier,

bike is starting first time on the button every time, they have taken the starter out and its turning over slower than expected ( not something i had noticed ) so they are replacing it under warranty, but they cant order till monday as didnt have one in stock so looks like back end of next week before i get it back, they are also have another look at sorting the squeel from the front brake:thumb

12 months warranty :thumb:thumb priceless

Triumph

Just read a road test of the new adventure thing in the daily telgraph (on line) Kevin Ash gave 5 stars out of 5. So cant be allbad gave statistics but not how heavy it was, range about 190 miles.
