got 1999 1100 g.s. 39500 there is 40mm of transmission backlash measured on the tyre in 1st gear on centre stand, slight whine from gearbox/transmission both don't seem hot to touch is this normal?
My 1150 has similar amounts of backlash,so i dont think thats a problem.
Your gearbox should be one of the later (post '97) ones so no inherent problems.
Does it whine in just one or all gears?.Is it filled with the correct GL5 spec oil?.
Have you checked for bevel drive big bearing play/wear?.
Worn tyres can whine as well.Does noise change when cornering?.

Only had it in gear to check backlash engine off,
whines in 3rd,filled with correct oil changed last chrimbo will try semi syn this time, checked wheel 3-9 and 6-12 no play in either plane, noise is constant in corners or perpendicular, could be rear tyre well worn.Think i'll just turn me mp-3 up thanks for all your input
