Backrest for topbox?

Anyone got the BM backrest fitted to the BM topbox?
1) Is it any good?
2) How much?

Ear ache from better half. Even with ear plugs!

My used R12GS came with the backrest fitted to the topbox, it is effectively two pads made of the same material as the seat cover. The top pad is a triangle and is prone to digging in the pillions back. Apparently these pads are expensive from a dealer, so you would be better off with a bit of foam and some gaffer tape mate.

I hardly ever take a pillion anyway but if I didn't have the pads and it was my money, I wouldn't bother. I can't see why they aren't a standard fitment to the topbox anyway, typical BM penny pinching if you ask me for what is a bit of vinyl covered foam.

After a trip last month round europe HID got fed up with the edges of the top box digging in her back, I got hold of the BMW offering and she says it's a big improvement and she's happy. But at £40 ish it's expensive. I paid £20 pleading a case on the grounds they should be fitted a standard, due to the poor design which allows the hinge part of the box to stick out into the pilions back which shouldn't happen.

I got the BMW backrest with my BMW top box. My daughter who's 17 rides pillion, she says it alright.

I forget what I payed for it, but it was over priced.

My wife has no problems with the BMW pads. BMW jacket has paded insert which works.

I have it fitted on my topbox also...and it's both nice-looking and functional according to my friends who has been riding with me. So I think you should go for one if you think it's worth it!

My wife finds the backrest more comfortable with the box expanded. You therefore have two effective positions for differing support.

have even suggested placing an Airhawk cushion against the box for ultimate luxury- but she needs it on her bum

I originally had the box fitted without the pads and my girlfriend complained a lot. Since fitting them she still complains a lot, but not about her back on the top box
Paid about forty quid, but dealer fitted them to the box free of charge (Only a five minute job, but saved me getting my tools out.

I just put one on today... according to the book I have, BMW list price is US$95, overpriced but what BMW product isn't?...

fitting it is a 5 min job... but to be honest I almost put the top pad on upside down which does make it very triangular and pointed, but an easy mistake to make since it fits/mounts just fine upside down...

@ Pukmeister: perhaps you should check that the previous owner who put one on your bike didn't mount it the wrong way as I almost did, it should look like the pic KiwiAdventure posted above...
