Hello.
New to the site and to my R1200GS. After several bikes and the concern of passenger comfort, I wanted some sort of backrest without fitting a TopBox.
Anyone interested in home mods or do people prefer buy/bolt on/or have fitted equipment?
Mine is removable and has the full approval from the woman.
Just trying to figure out how to upload a few pics. (Probably should just out for a ride?)

So it's a car seat headrest that you reupholstered. It looks very neat. How is it attached to the bike?

Hello. Yes it is. Two stainless adapters below the carrier the rest just pushes into. They use the existing bolt holes although the front bolts require an additional 10mm in length. Preferred somthing more substantial that fixing to a plastic carrier although I do appreciate plastic has come a long way.

I think it's a great idea. Especially since car headrests will need to meet crash test standards. Do you have any pics with the pillion seat removed so that we can see the fixings?

Hello
Just 2 pieces of 20mmX3mm Stainless and a 20mmX13mm spacer with an 8mm hole through it welded to the end. Each strip has a stainless tube 18mmX60mm(or so) with a 12mm hole through it welded in the right position. Two hole through the black placsit part of the carrier to suit. rear seat retains full movement. The headrest is in fact reversed to meet the correct angle of the passenger's back. Could do with another 4°. )Not sure this will now comply with the original safety tests) Took 50mm off the bottom of the legs as well. Looks better as well as fits into the back better (by all accounts). I made a cover for the original headrest and seal the stitching rather than a re-cover. Still trying to perfect a way of making it removable as I'm sure it will get damp.

Her legs are a bit short at one end and she argues she is over 5ft??? gerarddwatts. Reducing the height by 50mm was a good move.

Stressing its not really my thing to see a back rest on a GSLC (its like putting panniers on an XR...................:blast) but congratulating you, fella, on making it :beerjug:

I think you`ve done a superb job, I`m an advocate of making stuff myself (rather than making fekk all and then criticising people who do).

What you`ve made is superb and looks just the job!

Well done fella and ride safely.

Mark Hooton.

Thanks Mark. Its easy removal means it's only there for the passenger's benefit. Makes it look like a scooter with no-one on it.
