I have just renewed by car insurance. The new certificate lists a few countries for automatic coverage at the full level in the schedule for a total of 90 days for the policy year. In addition to the EU, the other places are
Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gibraltar, Iceland, Liechtenstein,
Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, San Marino, Serbia and Switzerland.
The policy is from Saga and underwritten by Acromas from Gibraltar. The latter seems to be wholly owned by Ageas since earlier this year.

I have highlighted the ones that are not on my current policy from the Post Office, underwritten by Ageas itself.

I suggest anyone buying insurance and planning to visit the Balkans checks their insurance certificate and policy document to see if you have full cover as standard. If you do not, then ask your broker or underwriter why not. I suspect many companies are yet to update their stationery in line with the latest agreements. Acromas, recently taken over by Ageas will have needed to amend all of their documentation not long ago.

My bike is insured through BMW (can’t remember the company they use now) and they would not insure me in Montenegro and Albania as recently as this October. Not even as a supplement. Proved to be problematic at the border as all the insurance booths seem to have shut up shop!!

Was in the Balkans in May Bosnia Croatia Montenegro was covered no problem with Bikesure but had to insure on the Border for Albania.

I'm with Bikesure: Highways which is Allianz. I just copied the text from my policy June '25...only Green card cover even in the EU then. Will call to see if that is full cover now.

The wording below is in place of an international Motor Insurance Card (Green Card) and only
provides cover to the minimum extent required by the law of these countries.

This insurance applies in respect of accidents or losses occurring in all member countries of
the European Union, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro,
Norway, Serbia, and Switzerland.

they are only required to give the minimum cover, and that would be for the whole year

most policies have some wording in the full policy document extending full cover to a number of days per year or per trip. This is in my policy:

If your – or your named driver’s(s’) – trip is to any of the countrieslisted in the table, we will provide the cover shown in your Schedule.Following the Brexit transitional period you no longer need to obtaina Green Card (International Motor Insurance Card) when travellingto these countries. The period of cover under this section willautomatically commence as soon as you or your named driver(s)enter one of these countries and will cease after 90 days in totalhave been spent in one or a combination of these countries, eitheras a result of a single trip or multiple trips. If your – or your nameddriver’s(s’) – trip extends beyond the 90 days, cover will reduce tothe minimum cover required by law to drive in the country you oryour named driver(s) are in

Note the 90 days at full cover then the drop to minimum to be legal for anything over 90 days

If Allianz are not offering full cover for a period then they are being a bit tight compared to Saga/Acromas
