Hey up
I've just taken my barrel off and there is no Base O ring
The bikes a 1990 GS 100 and there is a groove for one in the barrel and a step in the crankcase for it to fit
There been one on all me other bikes barrels ( not that I have done many)
Am I missing something or dont they have um on the later models

I am having the other side off tomora to check that side while I am at it

confused . com

thanks for any guidance :thumb2

You sure that 'step in the crankcase' ain`t the O ring stuck to the crankcase ? :augie

Mick, I am assuming this is your GSPD? as I remember you telling me you had a dribble from the tubes? You can fit them or not, one of the tricks I found out about while working with Mat Beekers Boxer toko is that he fits a paper gasket an all bikes rather than the O ring. You might like to consider it as an option as the O ring is generally considered a crap solution to the problem and it makes no difference... well practically.. not that you would notice to the overall performance.

I will soon start rebuilding my 93 GS engine , it has been apart for a few months for legal reasons.Dont ask.

What are the opinions regarding sealant around the barrels - there was a gray rubbery stuff everywhere including the push rod rubbers when I stripped it, and it was reasonably oil tight, but I dont know if it would be just as oil tight without it.

And when might one need the oversize O ring that some places sell - the standard one seems to fit OK.

My 75/7 has the gasket at the base and it is perfectly oil tight , and it hasnt been touched for 8 years, so I might go along with the idea of using one on the GS unless someone comes up with a good reason not to.

As I mentioned above the paper gasket seems to be the better fix over the O ring and is used by one of the major repairers I spent some time with last year on all airhead engines. HTH, Your testimony re your 75/7 bears this out...!!! I had similar silastic or loctite gasket solution on one of my airheads until I replaced the barrels on conversion to 1000cc. If I were doing them on my GSPD I would now use the gasket over the O ring JMTPW.

My 91 r100 engine had the O ring on it when I dismantled it but I didn't have a spare for reassembly. So no O ring and just a smear of Three Bond 1211 on barrell base and push rod rubbers. 15000ks and no leaks.1211 is white but they make a grey one as well which sounds like what Beemerboff has

Got tuther barrel off this morning and that too had no O ring on it
It did have a 0.5 mm line of sealant around the outside edge of the flange
I dont think this has been leaking - just the silly push rod rubbers - and maybe the rocker cover at some point - new delema is to decide whether to swap these tubes for the SS ones - these have no rust at all and the bike looks like it has never seen salt - even the exhaust nuts came undone quite easy - the threads look new . Yes and I know some of you will kick off with renew this and buy new that - dont forget that I am a pensioner :rob
Archie did you fit the paper gasket with a sealant or dry :thumb2

thanks for the comments and advice
Love this forum :thumb2

no need to bugger around with homemade gaskets and a minute reduction in compression, a little smear RTF(gasket goo) sealant will keep it oil tight. oring and rtf = belt and braces will not leak for a very long time (if ever)

edit.
i have used sealant on the push rod tube rubbers and it caused problems and leaks. when i renewed them again i followed the recomendations in the book and they are dry and trouble free.

Mick you've answered your own question -if the tubes are not rusty or damaged and you are on a budget leave them there. :thumb2

The only time anyone will see them is when you are cranked fully over mid corner with the pegs scraping
