So today I wanted to do some route planning. Loaded up basecamp. Tells me there is a new version of Garmin Express. And new maps. Installs all tickety boo. Launches. Maps on Basecamp are now 2026.2. But go to basecamp and search for anything, It does find your hotel, campsite etc. But try and click or add new waypoint to route and boom, basecamp just closes. Basecamp v 4.7.5.
Anyone else having this issue or are well now MRA converts?

You will find allot of us have switched to MRA. I haven’t touched base camp in ages. 5 years must be.

Are you using it on a Mac or PC?
PC, same one thats been trusty for a while. I seem to recall an issue similar to this last time maps were updated, and then after a few days the issue seemed to get a cure via an update from Garmin express..

Do you have the right map selected for the route you are working on? Sometimes basecamp can have a hissy fit if you select a different map than the one a route was originally created on (unless you open the route and recalculate it) on the currently selected map. For example, I have an old Nav IV that uses NT 2025.1 maps and new Garmins that use NTU 2026.2 maps. If I open a route that was created in NT 2025.1 and try to modify it before recalculating it on the NTU2026.2 maps it "may" become unresponsive. This has happened to me a few times in the past re-opening basecamp and recalculating the route before adding waypoints or otherwise modifying it usually sorts it. If you are starting a new route from scratch...........I haven't a clue :D all tickity boo with the two win 11 and one win 10 PC's I have basecamp and maps installed on.

A couple of the lads I have sent routes to seem to struggle more with base camp if they are using an apple device.
My laptop has the latest update but my old Zumo 660 doesn’t. It sometimes tells me this and just uses the version on the 660. This seems to work fine. I still find Basecamp much, much easier and much more user friendly than MRA or Google maps or even calimoto. None of this changing format to GPX or whatever, just send to the device. Job done.

File. Export, choose destination and rename if desired.
BC saves the file as : filename.gpx
You can keep a copy on your phone/sd card/ ssd etc in case your satnav needs a reset or you get a file corruption etc. when you're away from your PC and BC.

Tip of the day:
Having a copy of 'Basecamp portable' means you can use anyones' PC anywhere without needing installation.

If you have copies of maps on a micro sd and plug that into a usb card reader, you can plan more stuff as BC/ Portable BC will read them.

I use it on Mac, so really unsure if this applies to the Windows version, but I noticed (and always remember that BC has been discontinued ages ago, so surprising it actually still launches) that it runs way more stable if you restart the computer before opening it. At least on Mac.
Doesn't hurt to try on Windows too I guess.

I’m not sure it is discontinued as I have updated a couple of months ago. 26-2 or some such numbers.

Yes, it has officially been discontinued years ago.
Latest release is from 2023.

The "26" updates you are mentioning are most probably the Garmin cartography updates (naming follows the years), that still goes on because it is a different product. ---> 2026.20

I think that will be your maps.
The Basecamp app itself is on v4.8.13 on a Mac, and 4.7.5 on Windows, and has been since about 2022.

Ok, rebooted pc and searching seems to have sorted itself out. Yes maps were same. Yes same versions mentioned. FCK, jinxed it. crashing again. Get an error list file cannot be read when re starting BC, Fix now? I select yes and it then opens and shows me my stuff, but searching seems to overwhelm it. I believe its a database error..this is without my garmin connected, so purely using BC maps, latest version.

Then I connected my Garmin and it seems to be fixed again...well we'll see

Surely it’s only the maps that need updating the app works just fine and doesn’t need messing about with. I hope that Garmin don’t start messing with it.

I'll keep monitoring. I hardly use the search function as most routes are imported/stolen/created elsewhere as its faster and easier to see what's what. I then fine tune in basecamp. Then transfer. So far it seems to work when my garmin is connected. I have now also deleted the older maps from basecamp so it only uses the newer one. Will keep you posted

Search never really worked well for me. As in: would never find what I wanted :)

Suggestion would be (if one is inclined to keep working on BC in the future - I am, still) to install it either on an older spare machine with operating system that dates around 2022/23 or, more practical, create a virtual machine as such.

Bit of a faff, I know, but keeping that system “stable” and sort lf “crystallised” might help with BC working.

As we go ahead with updated O/S it’ll become more and more unstable.
Given that it wasn’t exactly the best software to start with :) I’m surprised it still sort of runs today.

In any case: good luck :)

What I can say is the it won’t see the latest 710/760i models on Mac now.
Express sees them fine.
Basecamp? Nope.
What is weird though is that two routes I did last night online in gpx editor, saved in OS Maps and then into Express are in Basecamp. In “last month”. Now the the only way that could happen is if it had seen the 760i

Maybe try deleting Basecamp entirely, then reinstalling from the Garmin website. It could be a corrupt file issue.

Obvs, remember to back up all your data either manually or via basecamp back up.

For a replacement of BaseCamp use Nav-on-Bike if you are a Mac user. it is free, faster and can upload the gpx files to your Navigation device.

TBH haven't used basecamp in 3weeks since losing use of my zumo 590. MRA has worked well to a degree. Direct A to B...Tom Tom Amigo was awesome and easy. even in France.
But I simply trust basecamp more than MRA at this point

The others, MRA , google maps etc are fine if you just want A to B routings. However if one wants to plot/plan a more interesting or scenic route then Basecamp is just about the only viable alternative. Basecamp routes are sent straight to my Garmin Zumo too. None of this changing it to GPX type thing, just sent straight from Basecamp to the sat nav, job done.
