Right before this piece of crap goes in the bin, I will see what knowledge is available. Bought from the site from a fellow forum member last year and have been pretty pissed off with the bloody thing. Went to use it today and I now have the following issue.
1. Switch on and press the "agree" to not using it on the move to proceed
2. Then pressed "Where to"
3. Then pressed "address" to put in the details I had
4. When "address" is pressed there is a long pause and then " In what country is the address" comes up with France as the country
5. I spell "England" and then press that and arrive at the "Spell City / Postal Code page.
6 Press that and Dover, Kent is on the next page.
7. When using in the car this morning there was no roads etc on screen, just the vehicle on a yellow background

Just about had enough of this utter plié of crap. So before a ceremonial burning, is it completely shot or can it be retrieved. Have tried removing / replacing battery to no avail.

This thing must have seen me coming........

If your mapping is on the SD card then is that seated properly?

If all else fails I'll give you a tenner for it :D

Try going onto the Garmin website , you can do a software upgrade, that may help.

Failing all else, I'm sure you can send it to Garmin, and they will refurbish it for you....... Latest software, latest maps and generally test it for any issues.

I haven't had this done, but have heard of it happening.

Good luck.

Hi Guys, thanks for replies, Bumpkin, £10 not enough for the pleasure I will get seeing it burn! Software up to date according to the Garmin site. SD card seated and the issue is the same with the card in or out. Will ring them tomorrow for advice.....

The 550 is a great bit of kit, took me all over Europe and one was on my rental bike in Japan - faultless
Get it sorted and enjoy. In all the years i am using Garmin products i have never had a problem or failure.

Used the unit in Europe last summer with some issues (not charging at times from the bike) Have bought a replacement cradle as the car one works fine and by holding the top right corner you can see if the unit is charging. No - not only maps of France - have installed europe on the device and was using last year in UK etc. Garmin web site tells me my maps are up to date and so is the software but went to use it today for the first time this year and then this. Sory patzx12, but in my experience so far, this most certainly is NOT a great piece of kit. The cheap Tom Tom my son gave me for the car is far easier / quicker to use, programme etc. Perhaps I have just bought a wrong 'un.....

I've used a 550 all over the show - including Alaska and South Africa. It's a top piece of kit - vastly superior to the 660 and any of the BMW navs IMH0.

Mine recently went totally mad so I sent it back to Garmin. For £100 they replaced it by return with a refurbished unit (that loos like new) and came complete with updated maps too.

Top customer service...

...went to use it today for the first time this year and then this.

Sounds like your almanac is out of date. Happens if you don't use it for long periods of if you move it large distances while switched off.
Put it in full sky view, switch on and leave it for 15-30 mins.

If its not showing the roads you are on, it sounds like it is "lost". Take it outside so it can sniff out satellites and do a master reset

I doubt you could get the whole of western europe on the 550 without using an SD card. Is it possible that the maps were on the SD card last year and you've now got a different one in there which doesn't have maps?

No change in SD card I am afraid but thanks for the suggestion. Have done nothing to it other than store it away for the winter.
