The reason for me asking this question is probably me being a TOTAL donut but...

On a 2017 GS1200 LC
How on gods green earth do you get the battery cover on?

I can see that the lugs either side locate into the holes on the battery box, but the ledge on the bottom prevents the cover going on. Add to that the fact that the bottom of the battery cover is wider than the frame at that point?

I'm very confused!

IIRC insert the bottom plate first into that slot and then lift the whole piece up to 'force' the pins into their respective holes

Hmmmm I Tried that - seemed like it took the strength of Samson to do. Didn't seem possible/probable. Will go try again now. Thanks

I had the same problem when fitting my Optimate lead to my 2017 GSA TB. Struggled to cover to fit, I took the foam spacer under battery out it it fitted perfectly. Think the spacer was factory fitted to accommodate slightly shorter battery.

I thought for a wee moment that you were being sarcastic as looking at P152 it is blank... so I tracked back a bit to (in my Riders Manual) P148 "Installing the battery"
I HAVE found one thing in it that varies from my bike - the rubber battery retaining strap on my bike is/was fitted UNDER the cover.
The manual shows it holding OVER the cover. Perhaps that's why it was a bugger to remove and impossible to replace?

Will have another try in the morning.

Thanks Wobbly65

No Phill I wasn't being sarcastic at all, just trying to help :) In my 2017 manual that page tells you how to insert the battery and re-fit the cover.

So today I went back to it... Tried everything that was described - still with no joy.

So I got drastic with it. I got a craft knife out and pared away some of the styrofoam at the bottom. This revealed the point that the bottom lug locates into (see the photos below) and the cover then simple slipped into place. The rubber banding was then replaced.

Why do BMW not produce the styrofoam with the cut-out?

I suspect, if you take the styrofoam out and look at the other side, the cutout will be there :) Some numpty at BMW would've put it the wrong way around? :)

D'you know - you are probably bang on the money with that. Have a read of another thread I've authored. I tried (and failed) to remove a T40 bolt holding on the rear rack this morning... I now have two shattered T40 Socket bits because some imbecile has torqued the damned things in SO hard... FML!
