hii always keep my bike on charge overnight so when i take it off in the morning to use the bike for work its showing fully charged but when i return home(after a 20 mile run with no lights etc on) and put the battery back on charge its saying that the chargers compensating(battery level low)surely the alternators supposed to keep battery charged or am i missing something:confused:

How do you know the alternator is working?

and don't call me Shirley ;)

best way to test the battery without an actual tester is.. let the bike cool down after your ride home and before you put it on charge see if it will start up normally and will the ABS engage. First thing to go wonky if the battery is undercharged is the ABS.

If the ABS fails to kick in soon after a 20 mile run then you either have a wonky alternator or a dodgy battery.. which is which is easily discovered but you will need a multimeter (or similar)

Everything could be fine and the fault is with the charger itself.

very good question.i don,t.i have,nt delved that far into yet.i might leave it off the charger the rest of the week and see what happens.the bike also feels like its struggling which sort of points to a dodgy battery to me or am i wrong?

How many volts is the bikes charging system pushing out?

What voltage is the battery off load and a couple of minutes after the 20 mile run?

What is the voltage when you connect the charger?

What is the voltage when the charger says it is fully charged?

wow,so many questions all in one go:D.right then answer for question 1)don,t know question 2)don,t know question 3)don,t know and finally question 4)don,t know.i,m a spot welder not a fecking auto electician:Dbut if you bear with me i,ll have some answers soon cheers buddy

You`re probably just another Internet biker worrying too much and finding it too easy to ask questions via the web.

Any Optimate will go into a 'charging state' on connection, even after a several hundred mile run.....it should, however,go to 'green' after only ten to twenty minutes.

There`s only a problem if the Optimate doesn`t go to green. :thumb2

constantly charged batteries , keep a memory if not fully discharged.
thats why an optimate will keep a battery topped up , but the battery is constantly charged at that level so the batery cell keeps a memory of the charge , and in time will not reach full charge capacity.

why do ye have to charge the battery every nite?

i use mine every day and it starts fine in the morning:augie

check yer mobile, why dont they last as long as when ye 1st used them, battery memory

you must have an old mobile. li-ion batteries don't really suffer charge memory problems. never seen it on lead acid auto batteries either. well, any auto battery actually

every cell or battery has an electronic memory, if the battery isnt fully discharged, the full charge will not reach to the optimate output.

a new battery loses (not sure the percentage) but around half its original holding charge every year..

Likewise.
Lead acid batteries don't actually like the complete discharge / charge cycles that are recommended for NiCd batteries etc - keep them fully charged and charge them whenever you like.

You probably think you`re saying what you know you really mean.......if you know what I`m saying.......but it reads like bollox to the rest of us. :D

Wet cells don`t have a memory,by the way.

i do bollox very well untill folk who know what they are actually on abart.:augie
do i give a fek ....noooo

passes the time:D

This article is about the 'memory' observed in batteries. For other uses, see Memory (disambiguation).
Memory effect, also known as lazy battery effect or battery memory, is an effect observed in nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries that causes them to hold less charge. It describes one very specific situation in which certain NiCd batteries gradually lose their maximum energy capacity if they are repeatedly recharged after being only partially discharged. The battery appears to "remember" the smaller capacity. [1] The source of the effect is changes of the characteristics of the underused active materials of the cell.[citation needed] The term is commonly misapplied to almost any case in which a battery appears to hold less charge than was expected. These cases are more likely due to battery age and use, leading to irreversible changes in the cells due to internal short-circuits, loss of electrolyte, or reversal of cells.

this explains my theory about memory , but also states that it isnt always the case, so the symptoms can be associated to the age of battery too.

its mainly sealed batterys, but its better to make any battery "work" now an then,
(ps , ugg, your post is a bit "bolloxy":D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D)
