Bought a 2012 GS1200 4 weeks ago, I've done 300 miles on it, been in garage for last 6 days without being used and now battery completely discharged..nothing.. after 6 days.
My optimate 4 will not charge it via canbus.
My 3rd GS, both the 2004 and 2017ADV charged via the optimate canbus..suggestions? TIA

I'd assume the battery is faulty and is unable to hold a charge. Unless there's a CANbus issue.

have you tried to chare it normally, and not through CANbus?

you need to disconnect the battery from the bike and try the Optimate 4 again.

the Optimate 4 senses if the battery is connected to a load and will not start full recovery mode unless the battery is completely disconnected. Recovery mode uses pulses of higher voltage to try to recover the battery. These pulses can harm the bike's electronics, hence the safety measure. If that does not work then you need a new battery. Assuming a 4-5 year lifespan, you would expect the battery to be the bike's 3rd battery coming to the end of its life.

Thanks both of you, have just gone back into garage with a prayer to the battery gods.

oh, and make sure the Optimate is not still in canbus mode as it will not use recovery mode in this setting

If you still have it fit the SAE flying lead direct to the battery to use the Optimate with. You can then use it for heated clothing and a tyre pump too. As said using the canbus option is easier but has it's drawbacks

From memory thinking back to my R1200R days there was a "procedure" for connecting a battery charger via the DIN socket and can bus system.
I think that you had to connect it but with the charger turned off, turn the bike on with the key and then off again and turn the charger on within 15 seconds of turning the bike off. Have you tried connecting directly to the battery using crocodile clips?

For a better understanding of the ZFE/charger handshake, your bike's electrical system and overcoming the "CAN-bus" popular misconception see the first two posts in this thread:
