Battery Life?

LiFePo is expensive but not a lot more than Odyssey and a fraction of the weight. Biggest benefit is no damage if left unused and only 10% loss of charge over 12 months of disuse. You only need to F one half decent battery through disuse or standby charger fault and its paid for. Those with no power to the garage could win with one of these.

It's also ideal for putting under the petrol tank so the old battery space is usable for other things. I changed my 2010 TC battery for a new OEM at the last service about 3 weeks ago.

The starting is now much more confident and eager. Which gives a much better feeling on longer trips!

Change it!
 
Having left the GSA on its tod in the garage for the last four months I checked the Odyssey at the weekend and it read 4 volts. Can't get it to recharge at the moment on the Optimate so I think I've goosed it at 3 years of age.
 
My brother has four bikes three of which get used infrequently and his garage has no power so batteries take a hammering.

An Antigravity LiFePo (at not many more £s than an Odyssey) starts to make sense to swap from bike to bike. Small and easy swap, no damage when left for months and minimal self discharge. Fit some plastic thump screws to the battery terminals with soft padding in the battery case and it's good to go.

Once it will charge you can recondition the battery by discharging slowly to 10V, then recharging to 100%. You can do that up to 5 times. It worked on my battery.
 
My very low milage TC1200 is nearly 4 yrs old ,done 47 miles before I bought it last year . It had been in a Guys front room on an optimate . I've been using it and found the starter sluggish , put a Mottobatt on it and it starts as it should . Great batteries . Bikes like to be used :thumby:
 
I have fitted Motobatt MBYZ 16 HD Battery`s ( 16.5 Ah and 240 CCA ) in place of the Stock Exide ETX14-BS on hexhead and twin cams..
They are the same dimensions and have a black case and orange writing unlike the normal yellow case and black writing.
They have probably opted for the different colour scheme as they are listed for a lot of Harley Davidsons.

I've just bought a tc and was surprised how small the battery was in it, in the old gs I had fitted an odyssey battery it was in my old bike for 7 years not always connected to charger but garaged, popped the odyssey into the new tc and its spinning over soon much quicker highly rate it !
Not sure I'm that bothered with the weight as the bike is hardly lightweight and with all the bits I keep adding to it it's never going to be :-)

Thanks for that info. I have actually managed to recover it by using a standard car battery charger on full boost rather than the Optimate but its good for my confidence that it seems the battery can take it and I don't need a new one.
 
When any type of lead acid drops below 9 volts at no load its probably stuffed. The chemical change become permanent. An Optimate with its high voltage kick might wake it up but damage will have been done. High current usually won't do the job (they seem ok initially but wont hold charge) but you had little to lose by trying.
 
The OP will probably get away with not having to change the battery, as the weather will be getting warmer. Because it will be more efficient in warmer weather. Next winter change for sure. I would change it now to be on the safe side.

I can find the yellow version without a problem, it's the black one I can't find - other than from America.

I'll ask my local bike shop if they can get the black version.
 
Got mine,mbyz16h from bitz for bikes eBay. Also www.motorcycle products.co.uk stock them. The H on the end of part No. denotes Harley davidson hence it being black.so you could try any Harley suppliers if no luck.
 
Yes, I just had a look and realised the colour doesn't matter, not sure why I thought it was on show.

Obviously confusing it with another bike, 1150 maybe?

I'll definitely change before next winter, the thing is maybe I won't have the bike for more than 4 years so why not have the benefit now? Re bump starting big twins when the starter motor on my Mutli failed even a tow-start from an RAC van didn't work, the back wheel just locked up.
 
These bikes wont bump start. I tried it down a hill it just locked the wheel even using 3rd gear and dropping onto the seat.

I'll be going for a fancy LiFePo which will get moved to the next bike (if I ever sell the GS). It may well not save money but having no damage from disuse it should be a lot more reliable. Brother is getting one to use on three bikes. Its light enough to easily swap to the bike he's using today.
