I started my yoke after washing it yesterday.......she didn't fire up as quick as usual and the battery light stayed on for a few seconds............strange noise and then she corrected herself and the light went out.



Alternator belt slipped?????

Is it possible the belt/pully got some GT85 on it while spraying in shock/engine cover after washing??

My 2010 one seized up, fortunately the warranty covered it. These bikes dont like sitting about for weeks on end doing nothing. Shit seems to find its way into the windings making a tough to rotate alternator even more tough to turn. Usually the casing splits. !

The alternators winding core is laminated steel glued together with insulation. Corrosion expands the plates until the casing spits or wires separate.

Mine made a noise like a worn washing machine bearing whirling away on spin cycle. Then O noticed an annoying rattle at tickover. On a close look the cracked case was visible. New alternator and its all fine again. Within 2 weeks on the shelf, the old one had jammed solid.

I used a smaller capacity Used alternator from Germany. Much less money than anything in UK and all its needed was a shorter drive belt.
 
Belts can/do slip when coated with lubricant.

Although hairspray often worked wonders on resolving the issue.

Belts are due a replacement around 36k iircc, but everything is an average; sometimes last longer other times less.

Worthwhile having a good look and slowly turning engine over, in normal direction of travel !!!
See if anything is either catching in the alternator casing or shiny worn bits on the belt.

why are you lot full of gloom,he just washed it right?,water on the belt made it squeak is all !
 
Don't assume it won't be the bad stuff. It's usually easy to rule out anyway. A few small screws will take off the belt front cover and a couple more to take off the rear cover.
 
Don't worry about it, mine does exactly the same after washing! :thumb

That's what I was hoping to hear.
My previous 07 never done this over 50,000kms with the same washing procedure.

The absolute worst thing you can do is wash a 1200 and then put away without it drying out properly.
Or wash it but do not get any water near the alternator.. I'm not saying your's is seized, but beware.

These three seized 1200 alternators are from the last six weeks.
And that's about the average for what i get in, one a fortnight. Shite quality. You can see the cracks on the cases in the pictures..

Funny but i've never had an 1100/1150 in with a alternator seized.

Mine lasted 70K miles but generally parts on bikes that are used regularly tend to last longer.

Edit that’s a bit extreme.
I mean corrosion of parts is less of a problem.
