Battery Removal - R1150GS ADV

Hi, I am new to this!

Does anyone out there know how to remove the battery from an R1150GS ADV? Do I need to completely remove the petrol tank and air box?
If I remove the battery to re-charge it, will it affect the alarm system?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Chris

To remove the battery you have to remove the tank I'm afraid.

If you just want to charge it, you usually can get away with propping the tank up with something ( a bit of wood) and popping on the crocodile clips. Its such a pain most GSers have a permenant connection from the battery to a lead that you plug into an intelligent battery charger like an oximiser or optimate.

You have no need to remove the battery just to charge it. The ADV has two plugs, one on the beak and the other on the starter motor cover.

Obtain a bmw male plug attach your battery charger to it and insert it into the sockets supplied to charge your battery. The optimate battery charger comes with a bmw plug as standard.

Charging R1150GSA

Hi Chris
You can charge it by connecting your Optimate or similar to the accessory socket just above your gear change. You therefore do not need to remove the tank.
The + terminal beside that accessory socket also goes direct to the battery so you can connect there if you prefer. This + terminal (only on the Adventures I think) can be used to start the bike with a flat battery by piggybacking from your car battery etc

Tank off job, remove the right side black trim panel (pull off as it's fitted wth rubber mounts) and you will see the retaining bolt, remove this and the tank can be raised.

On the same side youwill see the 3 fuel lines with quick connectors, seperate these and pull the line that runs t the left side under the tank.

Electrical connector block is on this side as well, disconnect this.

Finally diconnect the tank brather hoses also on the left and the tank is ready to remove.

One thing, a full tank is a nightmare to lift so hopefully you have a low fuel load.

do as suggested buy a charger with a bmw (or what is also called a "Hella" Din 'male' socket) plug it in - switch it on. and wait for that cute little green light to come on.
