Battery replacement.

I've searched and cant find the thread about changing a battery on the 1150.
My bike is an 02 R1150GSA with the small tank.
Am I correct in saying that I don’t need to remove the tank to replace the battery?
I'm sure I have read a thread that says I can just loosen the tank and prop up out of the way ?

Yep, just loosen the bolt (don't let the not drop out of sight) pull tank back slightly and lift the back end up. Prop it up with a piece of wood and your able to change the battery. Its tight but possible.

Check the throttle cables after as they tend to get dislodged and make the bike a bugger to start.

y not take it off ,as long as it aint full,,,,,,a few connectors aint hard to unplug,always worth a look round under the tank ,quick spray of water repellant wouldnt hurt in this climate

If simply having a go and finding out for yourself is beyond you,a cursory read of an easily available and inexpensive workshop manual would have told you all you need.

GC if your putting a odyssey battery in it you might have to extend the earth lead,ask whoever sells you the battery eg Motorworks or whomever if you need to modify.

Been waiting over 3 years for : to tell me to RTFM
It says

Removing and installing fuel tank
• Remove the seat.
• Remove side panel.
• Remove screw securing fuel tank.
• Seal the fuel feed and return lines with hose
clips, BMW No. 13 3 010, and disconnect.
• Disconnect breather and overflow hoses.
• Disconnect the plug of the fuel pump.
• Remove fuel tank.
• Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
X Tightening torque:
Fuel tank to rear frame ................................. 22 Nm

Doesn’t say anything about changing the battery.
I may just remove the tank and clean underneath.
Just wanted to know, in advance, whether I had to go all the way or it was a 1 hour job.

BJ, I did buy the Odyssey battery from Motorworks, also bought the brass connectors so it should just be a straight swap.
Had to pay extra on delivery because I live in such a remote area.

The manual doesn't appear to tell you that the nut for the tank fixing isn't captive and when you try and undo the bolt it either turns and you sit there for ages waiting for the bolt to undo or the nut stays put until you remove the bolt and then the nut falls into a black hole never to be seen again.

I bought a Odyssey Battery for my 1150 GSA and I want to replase the old one but I dint know if I have to by the extra exes.brass conection.
Well you please let me know how you gate on.

RTP, it's the manual that has the fault not the bike.

its just as easy to remove the tank If you have the quick release connectors Then while you are at it change the o rings on the male side of the pipe connector( one on each side ) in them as a precaution to save fuel leaks. Two second job If yours is an 02 they probably need changing by now

Egon, you don’t need them but paying over a hundred quid and not getting them didn’t make sense to me, they were only a fiver.
Folk have made their own or just adapted the fittings.
Bend it a bit.
Make yir own

Following death of the original I fitted my Odyssey tonight. With the 90 degree adapters the terminals are perilously close to the bottom of the tank and don't have the protection afforded by the very large lip on the original lead-acid battery. I've hacked some plastic Coke bottle tops about to create some protection, but I'm still a bit nervous. I think I'm going to revisit it and find a way to make the straps fit direct onto the battery terminals without the 90 degree adapters at all.

But I seem to have a huge gap under the tank where there are all sorts of gizmos in GC's photo. On my bike (GS1150 2002 not-ADV, non-ABS) all the black plastic bits with the silver foil filler cap thing are missing. All I have is a big gap about the size of a gallon can, with mounting holes for brackets. Is the stuff in GS's photo all the ABS stuff (which I don't have)? If so, the empty space which I have is a dreadfully wasted opportunity to build another gallon into the fuel tank of non-ABS bikes.
