Firstly hello to you all.
I have a 2000, 1150gs, 36000 mls and standard.
Had it for 5 years with no problems its on its third battery over winter the battery died it just about started when I went to it (reset clock) used it a few times till I got a new battery , the odd time I stopped for fuel it just started but reset clock even after a 150 mile run ,so new battery fitted all was fine until today, 190 miles stop for fuel and dead, just turned engine once then no power, nice man with jump leads on hand got me going again. Got home another 70 miles and turned off and tried again this time it started but only just?
The only previous problem was the starter lead came slightly loose (3 years ago) just cleaned up and refitted it with lock washer. I have checked all connections battery and starter.
Any ideas folks??
thanks in advance.

Is it charging OK ?.When the engine is running, you should be measuring about 13.5 ish volts across the battery.Check the alternator drive belt tension (at 36K miles it should be replaced).Do you have an alarm on the bike and what kind of battery have you got fitted?.

Thanks for the reply colban.
Won't start again this evening but alternator belt was replaced at 24000, tension is fine, battery is fully charged and full power to starter, but I think the starter is dead. Removed it from bike and conected it to jump leads and nothing, so its going to a mate for official diagnostic and strip poss repair or Ill price a new one..

There is a good ...

... diagnostic guide to bike electrics here although in your case I think you've probably narrowed down the problem already :)

I was going to put a fiver on defective brushes but starters have been known to break up inside.
