I've read through the old threads but can't find the answer.
05 GSA 1150 has flat battery, not totally as its still primes the fuel pump and has bright dash lights, so me thinks ok whip battery of my old motor ( car) in the garage connect the free standing battery to the emergency connections on the starter and rear cylinder +and - = bike should start.
If only, the thin type bike jump leads got pretty hot and I had a waft of smoke from the starter motor area. Checked but could see and melted wires, maybe its just the car battery bats not in a full start of charge ( its a Bosch S3 70Ah) not really sure. It turned the bike but maybe not as fast as it should so I'm thinking go and buy some heavy duty leads and have a go straight from the Landy defender this time.
Question is engine running on the Landy or not ?
I'm sure life was easier in the old days without all this electronic worries of frying.
Anyone got any thoughts on this ?
Ta

Landrover DEFINITELY turned off......and do not try and start the bike once it's connected for a few minutes

PS I jump started my Landy 130 many times from my GSA :D

Thanks fan yum . I've taken the battery off and stuck it on the optimate for a day or two.
I remembered I had the " Clarke jump start 4000" in the cellar, so I tried that but only waited 30 seconds when connected as I got bored.
Wouldn't start and th power to the starter seemed intermittent.
Anyway everything is on charge now so I'll try agin in a day or two, I'm gonna use this GSA 1150 though winter once its sorted.

Go on I give in....
How come the JonnyBoxer personal attack posts have been deleted along with my replies?
Mates of mates or just an issue with defending ones self from a smart arse ?:nenau

It's a technical forum, I shouldn't have done it

I'm truly sorry for spoiling the techincal 1100/1150GS section.......................apart from that my views haven't changed

Got it?................Great

Let's move on:D

The optimate will re-charge the battery (probably, it depends on the initial whack charge it needs) but beware......it is more likely to fool you into thinking that your battery is fine, then it will let you down right when you don't need it to.

An optimate will charge a battery up as far as it can, then it will report 'Fully charged'.....that's bollox, all it means is 'I've charged it as fully as I can'

If you are doing lots of short journeys, your battery may have just run down....it takes 20 mins plus to put the charge back in that starting the bike in the cols takes out of it......if you are doing longer journeys though and it still went flat, then either you have a leak (diagnose by putting DMM in line with terminals to see what is being drawn when bike is off) or most likely, your battery is nearly fucked.

Optimates have their uses, but keeping a bike plugged in to one all the time should NOT be one :)

How old is it, and of what type?

PS leave all the rest of the shyte at the gates of the tech section huh ladies? :comfort

The bikes has been stood for a few weeks outside with a cover on it, I've looked for the invoice from motor works and its new in April and is a Exide gel 12-19 OE battery, had it on the optimate since 3pm and I'm still on the amber light. I know what you mean about giving a better than it actually is green for go light.
I think I may have other issues as the booster pack didn't cut the mustard either :blast
I'll leave the bike battery and booster on overnight and try again tmrw, if neither work the Landy will be driven into position !! :bounce1
PS I started out with a tech question but " the voice of the people" moved it to another topic. I am happy to keep it clean if not pocked with a stick :D

They were all deleted because they have no place in a technical forum. Take your squabbling to the pub if you feel the need to fight it out.

I'll leave the last few posts I place to give some context to this reply but from this point, any further bitching will get deleted. Lets please keep it to technical issues in this forum please.

So I'm wondering if the original bike battery merely lacks the oomph to start a fire via whatever fault the starter has developed? I know the battery is the first thing to suspect, but you're saying it's fairly new and two jump-start alternatives have also failed? Maybe it's not a shortage of amps in, but a surfeit of amps being consumed without spinning the motor?

It's spinning the motor , then not spinning, then spinning etc. it's hard to say if its the battery or maybe just the fact the bikes has been stood outside for a few weeks and things are a bit unwell through lack of use.
I'm going to stick the Exide back on when the rain stops, pull the plugs check for spark etc and try again. If that fails I'll pull off the starter and clean and lube it. The starter motor was pretty hot when I check the during for loose wires etc with he lactic cover off.
Big difference between bikes kept indoors or outdoors in poor weather I guess ? Especially when not use very week at least.
It was perfect when I set used it is I'm hopefully thinking once I get it going things may free up with some regular use.

If the starter is spinning and then stopping i wouldn't think its the plugs as the starter should spin even if it doesn't fire. My guess is either starter, battery or leads to the starter. If you have a volt meter on the battery it shouldnt drop below 10volts cranking. If you have some jump leads can you try going straight from the negative on the battery to the case of the engine this will eliminate the bike earth.Try the same from the positive on the battery to the main feed wire on the starter. To eliminate the trigger to the satrter disconnect the small wire on the starter solenoid and use a seperate wire to touch on to the live battery post to try cranking it if it cranks ok you have issues with the switch or wiring.Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for tips. I'm going for a battery recharge, check and clean connections to starter/battery to see if that does the trick.
Failing that I will follow your guide. I'm just thinking its because the bikes been stood in the damp etc. hope once she's up and running all will be ok. The bloody thing was perfect last time I used it.
The bike didn't fire on any of the spin ups so I thought maybe check and dry the plugs would help.
Just need the rain to pass and I'll crack on with it.
Cheers

Well I've concluded right or wrong that the starter is goosed. I've charged the Exide gel up, primes the fuel lively enough bright dash lights but won't turn the motor, even a 5 second effort with a fresh charged Clarke 4000 jump start booster only had it moaning over slowly, and the starter was getting hot.
Conclusion...... They don't like being left outside for long periods without use! :blast

A while ago I had a problem trying to start my 1100RS from my car battery. To cut a long story short it turned out to be a dodgy starter relay. A used one from Motorworks sorted it. By the way, the section in Haynes about how to test the relay is b*llox.

No its probably the old magnets fallen off, just an age thing, they pull 3 or 400 amps in that state no battery will help:beer:

I'll strip the old starter when I've hit time and have a look. I'm sure your right though. I think motor works do new magnets so I'll glue some new ones on.,:D
