08 gs had a problem with them and replaced them what bike though?7
just sold a load of odysseys cheap:blast

Two battery's in 20 months ??

My 09 GSA's original battery is still going strong after 32 months and 20k miles.
If the bike is layed up for more than a week, I use an Oxford Maximiser 360T.

I had the first battery replaced after 11 months on my 05 bike, yet the next one they fitted is still fine. I occasionally hook it up to an first generation Optimate.

.....just getting cold, cue the battery questions :)

Perhaps your trickle charger is doing more harm than good.

My thought too. An AGM battery shouldn't need to be on a trickle charger. Mine usually fires up if left for 6-8 weeks between rides. I probably hook up the optimate for 2, maybe 3 times during the course of the winter. Just for a day or two to top it up to replace the minute drain from the LCD panel if I'm not in the mood to ride in the damp or cold.

took the battery back got a free replacement but still have not figured out why i am having this problem checked my accumate thats working ok or was i just unlucky to get 2 bad batteries

I have no battery problems either. You don't things like parking your bike outside, then start it again to move it inside and shut it down immediately? These are only tiny batteries compared to car ones, and a 1200GS takes some starter power to get thru the compression strokes (those who tried to push start a 1200GS will know). So starting and shutting down immediately will leave the battery in a low state. More so with the lights coming on automatically as the bike starts.

Seen loads of these type threads and most of them start with I use an optimizer or whatever. Then there are the other posts with well my battery is original and x years old and I never touch the thing. See any connections in there? If you don't use the bike for large periods of time then pull the battery out the bike and leave it alone till the spring. Leaving it alone in the bike for 4-6 weeks will also be fine but more than that pull it out so the electronics don't flatten it.

My April 07 GSA original battery died this very morning, after first few cold days and nights.

Trying charhing now, bu looks like I will have to to replace. BMW dealer here offering 12V/14 Ah for approx 150 Euro (130 Uk pounds)

Alsp, have found locally this EXIDE GEL battery cheaper, for approx 95 Euro (82 UKP):

And this EXIDE AGM even cheaper for 70 Euro (60 UKP)

Can someone clear this out GEL or AGM ?

Any recomendations and experience ?

Thanks and cheers,

First point: the 2 batteries you link to seem to have different measurements. Will they both fit in your bike? 175x87x155 or 185x80x170?

Both are sealed for life, maintenance free. The gel and AGM (absorbed glass mat) are just different ways of holding the electrolyte to improve efficiency. AGM seems to be taking over from gel on most new vehicles.

I have an AGM in my bike and would be happy to fit the cheaper of those two to my bike in the appropriate size. One advantage of the AGM is that they won't leak if the bike has a little lie down because you drop it or worse.

Exide have a multi-national website which includes a Serbian section, in English at http://www.exide.com/cs/en/product-...transportation/motorcycle-transportation.aspx - in reality the motorcycle products are identical throughout Europe. It appears the gel battery is not listed and that the black AGM battery is current.

Thanks much mate,

I just realized size difference between these two, and then between these two and original ETX-14 BS that died this morning.

Despite Exide dealer here aggressively advertising two larger ones (one AGM and one GEL) "as best for your BMW bikes" - in fact only YTX-14 BS (new model replacing original ETX-14 BS) will fit my GSA battery place, as the same size.

Thanks for clearing AGM vs GEL issue, I will go for this one:

http://www.exideuk.com/ytx14-bs-114-p.asp

Can get it here for approx 43 UK pounds.

Thanks again,
