Bavaria and back

It's cold and grey today 10 degrees feels like 6. From there we followed a Calimoto route which wasn't all that, maybe the stuffing of scenery trifle has spoiled my appetite. We opted for a coffee cake stop at Kafe Sailer, Ried. Friendly woman server has ridden a trans alp but favours her Chevy Malibu these days. She was very chatty and advised we headed to Mattsee on the way.

Back into the rain this afternoon. Nice wide typical Austrian vistas. Stopped for a re fuel and coffee Obendorf. Good range of Haribo, betting machines and a bar inside the garage!

Tonight's hotel is Berghotel Adersberg near Grassau. Big modern chalet style at the top of a long concrete road, no problem for an awesome GS if I could do it on the bagger in the wet. No restaurant tonight but the guy has offered to make pizzas, not sure of they are Dr Oetkers finest or he's making proper ones, we'll find out at six. I was up for riding back down for some dindins but not the whole group.

Beers in reception fridge for later.

View from hotel forecourt. Might clear later.

Decent breakfast here. Usual suspects plus many jams, teas and pickled items.

Pizzas were okay, only had one beer and played chase the lady, ''twas alright and more relaxing than real life.

Google led us west across to Überlingen. Kind of rural A roads with triple lane overtaking zones, open Austrian prairie style although we were in Germany. A few picturesque towns and villages and a couple of big ones. I enjoyed the day, faultless tarmac and making progress where we could without breaking the group too much.

Coffee and cake was taken at a bakery on the side of a supermarket after 90 mins or so. Then a lunch stop at Isny which had a very smart pedestrian centre, we parked the bikes in a corner and went into Seppi Brauhaus, seemed like a gastro pub. I'm sure I took some pictures, we had salads, a soup and a pizza. Unfortunately soft drinks all round. I did take a pic of a dog on a bike though. Bonus!

We're at Roteshaus in Überlingen. A smart b and b, it's giving me technical college vibes. Triple rooms at a good price, loads of room.

I saw a rather fetching car that I think had been wrapped. Is it a Mazda?

Found a rustic looking bar going for a beer then some dinner.

We took the short walk into town to find a pub and dinner. First stop was Galgenhölzle serving Guinness, first thing that hit you was the wall of smoke, up your nose it was hard going. Couldn't stick it, went for walk round then into Anuschs Pub. A nice welcome and less smokey only two puffers and an extractor fan. What's going on? You'd probably describe it as a dive bar. Stayed for one with a plan to return for the Arsenal game.

From here wandered up to a Mexican called Guten Taco and a very potent Margherita, decent food and beers.

Back to the dive bar and more beer until it went 3-0 on agg. Properly cured and more drinks than usual and a set of going out clothes trashed like it's 1995.

Welcoming owner was chucking vodka down his neck, smoking and snorting coke off his hand, I wish him old bones but....

Decent brekkie at the last b and b. Didn't feel particularly 'sharp' this morning, been craving 2nd hand fag smoke all day.

Calimoto was in charge I think, didn't take much interest if I'm honest. Our route went along the lake westwards quite nice and posh then tracked NW towards Titisee Black Forest where we got coffee, banana splits and strudel mit cream. From there onwards towards Wolfach for another brew then decent roads to Baden Baden. We're in the Holiday Inn Express again, we all like it. Some roads were not smothered in speed limits but it felt like most were. I was glad to get off. 7th day on the trot, I shall be more sparkly tomorrow I promise. Bike's filthy.

Pizza and pasta enjoyed in Baden. Everyone was knackered minimum beer and an early night.

Of course decent breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express. Some sausage patties on offer, tidy.

We refuelled opposite and were on the road at 0815. The route was Google no motorways across to Hotel de La Poste Bouillon. We did two hours before a coffee and leg stretch at a Boulanger. The amount of bread the were selling was astonishing. People were buying 8 sticks at a time, do they freeze it? Got me wondering. Pressed on but the French 20/30/50 speeds were a little draining after all the freedom we've enjoyed. I was okay but I think as a group it wasn't much fun for all. We'd taken that as it was 5hrs 30 which is a full day with stops, the other maybe was up to somewhere like Vianden and across from there but of course that was even longer. With more effort we could have made a route inside Germany, into Lux, we'll know next time. Prior to Metz we opted to head to Luxembourg hoping for better roads, through Thionville which looked nice and up towards Luxembourg City. Topped up and came across a pizzeria, details below. Nice covered terrace out the back, probably a little fancy for lunch but we were ready for a break.

Back on the road skirted through the business district, office buildings labelled Deloitte and HSBC but not a person in sight, is that a tax dodge or something?

Not been to Bouillon before, bathed in sunshine it looks lovely. A big selection of French Classic Triumphs parked up and a tooting convoy of 2CVs across the bridge. Nice welcome at the hotel and secure garage. Water and crisps I the room.

Off to the tunnel in the morning.

Any pub recommendations?

I'm home, Dartford tunnel was clear, first time for everything.

Eurotunnel was quiet too.

Last night we dined by the river at Le Bellevue. Food was good, veal chops with a mushroom sauce off the specials board.

It's lovely spot around there I'll definitely go back.

Brekkie at the hotel was good, decaf in the machine for the first time this week, good scrambled eggs and waffer thin bacon, croissants weren't full of air either. We got on the road at 0840 and had a trouble free run on the motorways via Naumur. Arrival was as per Google prediction. I'd say it was a four hour run with a couple of ten minute comfort breaks, obviously ours were longer 😉

Well that's my contribution to the annals of Ukgser, maybe someone will find it useful.

The best day was from Würzburg to Zenting, for the roads and having nose into Czech Republic, and for the biker hotel. The owner has put a road-book in every room full
Of routes including Czech. It's all an extension of Bavaria really but across the border, shame it was wet.

No issues or near misses that anyone is admitting to. The only mechanical is my front tyre pressure sensor threw a red then stopped working. That's been it.

Thanks for reading and not piling on.

That was a nice little write up to go through on a freezing January evening ! Thanks for taking the time to tell us all about it. Looked great. (y)

Nice report how did you find the bike on its first trip ? I found for two up touring on ours luggage capacity was a bit difficult.
