I have stripped the timing cover off of the 80 g/s today , with the intention of fitting a new chain. I have made some marks on the casing so I could find an approximate position , but how do I accurately set up the timing ?

If you are about to change the timing chain, setting up the ignition timing should be a piece of cake for you! But mark the position of the bean can before you remove the bolts that have, er, already been removed in your picture! The Haynes manual is really good on this but you need to read all the relevant stuff before starting, so you know if there's a special tool or 6 that will speed the job up....

Thanks very much for the information and I have got the timing chain together and the link in place. My clymer manual does not say anything about timing the the bean can so I'll have to check out a friend and Haynes manual. As was suggested I could use a strobe. Here are a few pics of the timing cover having a refresher and the chain, time for dinner now.
