does anybody know the bearing numbers for the main wheel bearing and the the needle roller on the crown-wheel, its an 08 gsa with the drain underneath?

cheers for that, i cant see the number on the large needle bearing on the main crown wheel, got the big deep grooved bearing which is 6013-RS also they could be different because pat's bike is an 04 gs and they could have been upgraded

I only replaced the large ball bearing, RH roller bearing and the large O ring when I did my drive recently. The large ball bearing is the only std one of the 2 that support the crownwheel shaft. The RH bearing is a non std bearing as are both seals. The large seal is non std, BMW being 9mm thick, with a std seal in the same OD and ID being 10mm thick. I can't say about the 2 pinion shaft bearings as I did not replace these. Mine is 09 which would be the same as yours.

thats very useful, thanks! would it be a job for a competent diy'er? any special tool req? thanks again :beerjug:

Depends on how far in you want to go, if it's only the crownwheel shaft bearings yes, pinion bearings need special tools, patzx12's thread details how he did his pinion bearings. There was no play in my pinion bearings so I decided not to change them. Here's a thread posted earlier you may find informative. Shows OEM drawings etc. Personally if I had to do it over again I would only have changed the ball bearing. Roller bearing was fine on mine when I took it out but replaced it cos it's on it's way to Alaska now...........:aidan

Is yours showing play in the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock?

yes at 6 - 12 0 clock when warm about 2mm, cold minimal, im going to take the wheel to a local wheel builder to be trued because i think this puts unnecessary stress on the big bearing and ive not seen a straight spoked wheel yet, would it be better if your just changing the large bearing to leave the final drive still on the bike to work on?

Yes, leave it on the bike,I did the change that way. How many miles on the drive? Think you're barking up the wrong tree with the truing of the wheel lessening the stress on the bearing. By all means true it up if you think it's badly out. A conversation with Devon Rim Co revealed that the std rims are only built to a 1mm runout.
IMO the large roller bearing is being asked to perform a function it can't fulfill because when you give the bike throttle the forces involved are trying to push the crownwheel away from the pinion gear which in turn make the ball bearing act as a thrust bearing. Similarly when you shut the throttle the forces act in the same way, albeit reduced. My bike had 285000 on it when I bought it and drive developed play within 5K. I think it had a lot to do with my riding style and the fact I would have wheelied it frequently. Last bike was an 07 GSA and it had to have the drive replaced at around 12K.

drives got 12k on it. ill get the wheel done when im doing the bearing the guy lives in the village and charges very little, when i was going to nw200 last year my mates commented that the wheel was all over the place and weaving like a bastard at about 90mph at 100 plus it was scary! im the same as you and ride it like a sports bike, ill be delighted if its just the wheel bearing, just ordered it £20! i need it done because im off to nw200 in 2 weeks, will you be in alaska? if so have a great trip and thanks
