Hi Guys
My bike it needs to go for a 24000M service and I want to know if I have to change the Bearings.

At what mileage it needs the Bearings to be changed?
Or how do I know if the bearings it needs to be changed?
Thanks.

There are more than 15 bearings on the GS. Why not replace them all, especially the big end bearings in the crank case?

bearings

:eek:sani offset the cost of this v expensive job by part exing that lovely jacket

FFS! the poor mans asking a serious question!
Wont SOMEbody give him a serious answer?

.... and it's me thats giving it?!

Sani,

too hard to answer in a short reply, but, to put it Very Simply;
if it wobbles - it needs replacing.

for example - wheel bearings - you grab the wheel at "10 0'clock and 4 o'clock" - if it wobbles even a little, the bearings need replacing.

ANY small amount of movement above 2mm or more is not good.

BUT, as i say - i am oversimplifying / and you do not say which bearings.

suggestion (and i'm not being a smartarse ) get a Haynes manual on Basic Maintenance. it will help and save you money and stop the p1sstsakers here.
:P <- to them! :D

had to say summink - couldn't bear to see you suffer... :blast :D

Sani Be careful He's lying!!!! ;) ;) ;) ;)

The front wheel must be able to wobble from side to side quite a bit!

So that you go Round the Bend!

Especially if you grab it at 3 and 9 o'clock it should move significantly from the middle line of the wheels with very little effort and for Oooooooo say 45 degrees either way!!!

With only 2 mm you will need to live in America with long straight roads and take friends with you so that you can turn it around at the other end! Unless there is a railway turntable at the other end :aidan :aidan :aidan

Bearing up

Sani, take the crash bars off (for me) and sell it, buy a new bike with all new bearings, get a pink one to match your jacket!.
Seriously (not that I wasent serious in the afore written) you won't need to touch any bearings, it's only done 24000 miles so the only bearings might require adjustment is the swivel pin bearings in the bevel box but the dealer will check these anyway.
My 1150 has done over 70,000 miles and the bearings are still ok and that includes some long off roading roads and prangs all through South America.
So dont worry, just look after those crash bars!.

When you go in for the service, just ask them to change the bearings, they'll happily do it for you.

My 1150 has just had it's paralever bearings done at 22k. As mentioned before check for play in the wheel and suspension linkage. A small amount up and down could just be wear in your shock linkage, but side to side isn't good.

To check front wheel bearins, just drop the wheel out and feel the bearing with your fingers (rotate it either way), as long as it doesn't feel rough, or show signs of slop in the wrong directionsm it should be fine.

If your servicing it yourself, drop the oil out of the bevel box and examine it for metal paticles (usually found around the drain plug), the oil will have a silvery look about it to, which are signs that the hardened surface of the bearing it going, although there might not be any play present...

Ogmios, you obviously haven't seen him ride, he wobbles all the time especially going round bends:eek:

Sani, seriously you have a Sat-Nav to sort out your bearings, the way you ride that bike doesn't even need an oil change:nenau

Why don't you have a total rebuild:thumb2

Get them to blue print the engine whilst it's on the bench in bits:thumb2

Oh and those tyres should be good for another 18,000 miles...............:augie
