Been knocked off , oil leak from rocker cover

Hi lads. . I'm on holiday down weston supermare. Went to filling station yesterday . I pulled away from pumps and stopped to sort gloves whilst sat on bike with engine running .guy reversed straight
Into me and knocked bike over onto right side and sent Me flying . Bike went down
Hard but stayed running. Oil poured out of right side rocker cover and the cover guard sheared bottom bolt off. Pickens bike up and turned off and put on side stand. Oil kept leaking for while longer as well as fuel pouring out . On to centre stand stopped fuel leak . Checked oil sight glass which was full prior to going over and its now half way down . Ain't tried. To start it . Stuck till bLoody Wednesday as everywhere closed.
I'm on my 07. 1200gs
Police attended etc all in hands of INS company . Pissed off as trip ruined after 18 month planning .

Not sure if engine damaged internally or not . ??

The magnesium cylinder head covers are quite brittle and can be damaged by even a simple bike drop onto a hard surface. Even a hairline crack inside cover the (invisible when cold) can leak oil as the engine temp rises.

Lot to be said for Touratech or BMWs own metal cylinder head protectors.

Fuel leak to be expected......you'd just fillled it up and then threw it on its side.

As Wicker says, the covers are brittle and can crack fairly easily.

I'd hazard a guess that there's no engine damage.......the rocker cover only contains a cup full of oil, but when it's warm and gets spilled out, it looks like pints and pints

The sight glass is still half full, so there's still enough oil in it......the chances are that by laying the bike down, the rest of the oil is caught behind a baffle and once the bike is warmed up on the centre stand and then it's allowed to settle naturally, it'll return to practically full (minus the one cupful)

The guard bottom bolt that's sheared off .....if it's the bolt that's sheared and the casing is ok, you may be able to put another bolt in there to tighten it up......or put in one of the top bolts

Personally, I'd whip the cover off, clean it thoroughly (a can of aerosol brake cleaner would be of great use if the garage has one) and inspect for cracks, smear chemical metal over any cracks visible and get on with the journey once it's set properly, if the bottom bolt is fixable/bodgeable.

Bike has been recovered back to our holiday cottage . Had another look and fuel still leaking on side stand but ok on centre . Bottom bolt sheared off and throttle sticking where bar hit floor . Damage to plastic seal on final drive but no leaks . Gouges and scratched all down one side and on left rocker cover and guard where it was hit . Ain't tried starting it . Prob be the morra before courtesy vehicle and arrange to get bike back to garage . Bloody back is killing so no more riding for me and a car to get the 340 miles home :-( . Think the oil leak looked worse than what it was .

sorry you got troubles, would you believe my bike went down two days ago and has meant im waiting for wednesday too, my covers not cracked but gashed/scratched badly, gutted as bike only 600 miles

I agree with fanum. I feel with the bike staying running whilst over may have meant you got a little more oil in the cover.

Take the cover off and check over, if all in place I feel turn her over, get up to the dealer as only 30 minutes from you and then continue your hols

Surely your insurance company has a 24/7 accident help/claim line?? I assume you can get a courtesy bike (I did when I got knocked off my 1200)?

Obviously you'll be claiming from the car drivers insurance...

Yeah have used helpline . Problem is everywhere is closed till Wednesday . Bike being recovered Wednesday morning to a north east approved BMW repair centre. No way I can manage another bike with my back so hope have car to finish trip and get home . . Other driver admitted liability plus it's all on CCTV which police have viewed just confirming what happened .

Seems to me loads of drivers dont know what their mirrors are for !! and / or dont bother to look anyway ! Often a case of dont expect something to be there so dont bother to check, blimey its not as if a GS is hard to see !! Sorry your'e hols have been spoilt here in the west cuntry - put a claim in for your back injury as well !!!

How does insurance work on garage forecourt? Is it classed as the highway or private property?
Get that back seen to as soon as you can is the advice i'd give after getting knocked off my bike in October. You can't be too safe and my ins company automatically used one of these accident claim Solicitors.

Makes no difference. You are claiming off the other drivers insurance. The forecourt has public access, so you need to be road legal to be on there.

Bike being recovered Wednesday and waiting for car hire place to call back , hospital checked my back but il be seeing my own gp as well soon as I get home .
