Best Front Pads for R1150GS Adventure m.y. 2005

Hi All,

I've tried to look for this topic but couldn't find anything that specific.

I need to replace the front pads to my R1150GS Adventure final edition (m.y. 2005). At the moment the options are:
Brembo
EBC
DPS
Ferodo Platinum


I know that BMW use Brembo as a standard but I've heard that the ones sold after market (red) are different than the ones used by BMW (blue).

I've got to the point where I'm unsure which pads I should purchase so your help would be greatly welcome.

I don't go off-road and I mostly use the bike for travelling/touring, so either one or two up with luggage.

I've been suggested to use sintered pads, which makes sense to me.

If you could advise and in the case none of the above is a good option could you also post the link where to purchase the pads you're suggesting?

I know Braking pads are really good but I haven't managed to find them online.

I know that Steptoe is based in London and I also know he uses Ferodo. I've already contacted him in private. Unfortunately I am not able to make him do the work as I also have to get the shocks serviced and so he suggested me a garage that provides that service. The garage in question uses DPS, which I don't know and I wouldn't like to use honestly. Hence my post.

Do you think Ferodo Platinum are the best pads for the GS?

Give the best feeling and feedback, kinder to discs as well

Thanks for the tip about Motorworks. The best price I could find was £ 69 from Demon Tweeks (2 pairs incl. delivery).

It is also worth mentioning that my calipers don't have the logo BREMBO on the outside face, they have the BMW logo.

Look on the inside on the calipers, not the outside.................they all say BMW on the outside

The inside will be Brembo or Tokico

Mine is a factory non ABS bike and has Brembo calipers, hence why I fitted the softer compound Brembo pads (non sintered, I think) from Motorworks and the feel/feedback is excellent and just like the oem Brembo BMW pads fitted from new (only changed fronts at 52k)

Is yours an ABS or Non ABS bike (as standard build) ??

Personally I try to fit oem or oem equivalent pads in my GS or Jap bikes
 
All was used SBS great value and great performance. EBC i found faded too much.
 
hey johnny can you link me to this? i would jump at that for a full set of brembos but theyre pricing up at just over £100 (2 front at £35 each and one rear at £31)

I meant just fronts, not rears and it was last summer

Brembo 07BB2407 front caliper brake pads BREMBO | BRA72407 @ £28.50 per side, so £57 for a pair for both front calipers

Carbon Ceramic compound (sintered are dearer, for ABS bikes)

Your concerns are unfounded. DPS pads are fine, as good as any other pads available. The only pads i'd never recommend are Newfren (or whatever they've changed their name to).

There are two types of claiper for your year of bike. The earlier Brembo calipers are completely different.

The later calipers (post 2002) have BMW calipers, one is badged Tokico on the inside, this is usually fitted to the servo/abs braked bikes which use a 2124 pad, the other BMW caliper pad is 2125.
BOTH of these BMW calipers are to be found fitted to servo/abs braked bikes.
But the BMW caliper which takes a 2125 pad is ONLY fitted to non ans bikes.

Look on my website at the gsshop.biz and there's a picture of the different calipers and the pads you need to fit.

So do you think that DPS are as good as Brembo? If so I'll stop searching and get the guys from ABE to fit them when they do the service to the shocks.

Otherwise I think I've probably found the oem pads on Motobins (www.motobins.co.uk), although among all the options I'm not sure which one I should get.

Could you advise?

PS: looking on your website mine are definitely not the 2050, but I'm not sure which one of the other two shown. Will need to check.

I was checking some photos of my bike and I am pretty sure they are the Tokico ones - BMW logo on the outside and Tokico on the inside.

Could you then please suggest which would be the best pads for my bike?

Oh dear oh dear... Get a grip.
All you'll get is a list of pads that people prefer.
It won't be a list of the best or worst. Just individual preference. Chances are that they've only ever used one or two makes of pads so any comparison between the many different makes will be pointless.

Whichever pad you choose will be fine and do the job perfectly well without any problems.
Do a search, you won't find any threads with stories of doom and gloom about brake pads.
 
Stop panicking - if they are on sale in Europe they meet pretty stringent requirements already.

Do you ride so that the footpegs are folding up and you are scraping the cylinder heads when you go round corners? NO? Well, you won't need racing braking performance then will you?

Whether you use any of the big brands, or a piece of seasoned elm shaped to fit, all that will happen is after the first 200 miles or so to bed them in, you will ride according to the braking performance you have - that is what you do already, subconsciously. How many people ride to the absolute limit of their brakes on the road? Those that do are the ones with their fork legs folded back to the alternator cover. :D

I bet if you had a test rider and gave him the same bike, fitted in turn with each make of brake pad, the difference from 70mph would be less than a foot in braking distance.
