BestRest Cyclepump Adventure - 12v Compressor.

I'm looking for a portable compressor, and wonder whether any of you fellows have had any experience with either one of these, or could recommend another make.

I know that these are quite expensive, but I would say that in the past I have had a couple of cheap compressors and found them a complet waste of money.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Never used the BestRest... but I can vouch for the Airman Compact Compressor from Screwfix and at only £14 it's great value. It's a lot cheaper than the exact model from 'other' retailers.

I've heard the Slime Compact Compressor is good too but it's still expensive unless you find a bargain. Unless it has been sold already the White Rabbit was having is having a clearout and has one for £15 + P&P.

One word of warning though, in case you don't know... connect the compressor to the battery via a 12V socket not via the canbus DIN socket because when the compressor starts working to get them higher pressures the canbus will have a hissy fit and say goodnight to your electrics. This is not from first hand experience, just what I've been reliably told by other tossers

I have a Cyclepump purchased from Metal Mule and it works as advertised - never had any problems, fits in a smallish bag and works from cig lighter socket which i use from the car (although i know there is one on the GS). It arrived after a couple of days from metal mule so their service in this instance was as expected. They are expensive (about £100 ish if memory serves me right) but I wanted something reliable which this is to the point.

Thanks, Stephen and Jed - much appreciated.

I will be away for a couple of weeks now, but am grateful for any other contributions in the meantime.

So you trailer yours everywhere then? ;)

I've got one of those Airman jobbies I bought from Wilco for about a tenner IIRC (thanks to Whatton for the heads up on that one). Works fine. :thumb2

Erm no don't take it out with me on normal day to day rides only long trips - i know kind of defeats the object. :blast

Yep, me too, I've changed the plug to a din plug and used it at the roadside for puncture repair and also when changing tyres. Got it to seat the bead on a front tyre but not on the rear. Brilliant piece of kit.

I've had one of these for a few years and used it in anger in France to keep a tire pumped up as well as using it at home as a good compressor on car tyres too, especially if used through their pressure gauge. It works. 'nuff said.

I got the bestrest inflator after a couple of cheapies let me down and stranded me miles from anywhere, I vowed I would never rely on cheapie 'it seems alright for a tenner' type stuff.
After a bit of looking around I found that ZenOverland were the cheapest at £75. I think they still are. It arrived next day and Gabe the owner is a nice guy to deal with ( I have no connection to them other than being a happy customer). As soon as the compressor arrived I had a play with it and it's a really nice bit of kit- and it's quick too, it shifts a lot of air for a small unit, it has a 2m extension lead with it so you could connect it to a car if needs be, the plug will go into a cig lighter or a din socket, and the croc clip adaptor means you can go straight onto the battery too.
I would recommend it no problem at all - after all a compressor will only let you down when you need it most - constantly inflating a slow flat, reseating a bead etc, so why risk relying on cheapies?

Pete

I've got both a Best Rest and an Airman and the Airman out performs the Best Rest on efficiency, price and stowing and if your really lucky you can pick an Airman up in Wilkinsons for as little as £7 occasionally, I think I got mine as a result of a heads up from Whatton 2 or 3 years ago.

Edit: I see it was Whatton.

I've heard that the pumps can sometimes trigger a CANBUS upset. Do you have retrofitted DIN socket or just stock electrics?
