Bevel Box drain plug

Tried to change oils today (engine, gearbox and FD). Engine and gearbox no problem - FD drain plug has a munged hex socket :-( OK, I'm going to have to get a new plug before I do anything, but what is the best way to deal with getting the old plug out? I'm thinking it might be best to remove the whole unit so I can hold it firmly in a vice? But then what? If the level/filler plug is anything to go by, the dealer must have let their trained gorilla loose on it last time it was replaced...
 
if i remember correctly there is an o,ring recessed in the plug too,try knocking in the next size torx bit in ,it should come loose ,also do it when you just come back from a ride a bit of heat may help,if that dont work then try tapping it around with a hammer and dot punch .
 
Yes - it is Torx. But it is also munged. New plug definitely required before I set about removing it.

Buy the o ring whilst you are at it, they are prone to getting chewed up and Sod's law says if the previous monkey wrecked the plug (presumably with an Allen key) they'll also have chomped the seal.
 
here's an alternative. Get yourself a Pela and suck out the oil through the hole for the abs / speed sensor. No need then to remove the drain plug.

Good idea ...... and then you can leave all the swarf in there with the dregs of the oil you didn't drain out :blast
 
You often find that the Torx tool is quite a loose fit in new torx head bolts.
Try covering the torx bolt socket with a bit of thin rag and tapping the tool in too prevent damage when doing up and undoing.
Sometimes using a piece of rag and tapping in an appropriate allen key (with care) will also extract damaged torx heads.
