Am I wrong to use the level plug on the final drive, rather than measuring 180ml?

Mine has a level plug behind the disc under the abs sensor. You can see it through the holes in the wheel hub.

It's a while since I had a 1250 but iirc thats a fill plug, but as above drain and put 180ml of the correct oil in

No it’s not the hole under the abs sensor is the retaining screw for the sensir
The fill hole is at the back of the FD
You need to measure the 180ml

I'm talking about a plug that is identical to the filler plug, about 20mm below the abs sensor bolt past the next web in the casting

Don’t know what it is but I don’t think it’s a level plug

If it’s the same as the 1200 the fill plug is oddly a hex not a Torx, the drain plug is Torx

Check the end of section 33 for the drain and fill plug torque settings

Its the same part number for both the level plug and copper washer as the filler plug
07 11 99 04 550

Could that be the breather plug??
I would think 10 is drain and 8 is filler ..
They had a few years , I mean to remember 2006/2007;2008 where they had no drain plugs as
BMW Stated long life oil and no need for drainage.
Then quite a few rear boxes went bust and they started to change oils again as part of service, every 20000 km or so.
Transmissions with no drain need to be turned upside down eg swivelled 180 degree to drain and then refill…

I think the plug you are referring to may be the old 200ml fill level, before it was reduced to 180ml.

I have just replaced the Final Drive oil on my 1250 (2024). I refilled up to the level plug.

Where does this 180ml figure come from ? It's not in the manual.

To my knowledge, there is no level plug, there's a drain plug and a refill plug, 180ml is the amount which should be put in. If you're filling until it comes out of the refill plug, you have way too much oil in there.

Google is your friend ;)

The rear final drive oil capacity for the BMW R1250GS is 180 ml (or 180 cc) of 75W-90 or 80W-90 hypoid gear oil. It is crucial to measure this amount precisely rather than filling to the edge of the filler hole, as 180 ml is the specification for the current R1250GS final drive.

Key details regarding the oil change:
  • Oil Type: GL-5 rated, SAE 75W-90 or 80W-90 gear oil.
  • Procedure: Drain the old oil, clean the magnetic drain plug, and add exactly 180 ml of new oil.
  • Torque Specs: Fill bolt (with new washer)
    20nM

  • Components: Requires a T45 Torx for the drain plug and a 6mm Hex for the
  • Important Note: Do not overfill; filling to the filler hole edge is incorrect for this model.
  • Ensure you have new crush washers for both the drain and filler plugs to prevent leaks.

BMW OEM service manual states 200ml at initial fill and 180ml for subsequent oil changes
Thanks, I'll have to get myself a copy.

200ml initial fill ? I drained out about 240ml, I'm wondering if the first owner replaced the oil. I would be surprised if he did as the bike was 18 months old when I got it with just 4800 miles.

I bought a Final Drive service kit from Motorworks, they supply you with 3 sealing washers which I presumed to be for drain plug, filler plug and level plug.

Thanks everyone for your info.

Were not talking about filling it until it comes out of the filler plug, I raised the initial query because I have always used the level plug and never measured the amount accurately, but it is somewhere about 200ml give or take simply going off the marks on my bottle.

How much oil did it take? About 200ml I bet

It’s not really a level plug though, that’s all I was suggesting, hence why I said the fill plug could be mistaken for one.
There’s no need to use the plug you’ve removed, just measure what goes in.

How is it not a level plug?
I don't see the point in measuring the amount of oil I've put in, when there's a level plug.
I could measure the oil I put in my van's engine, but prefer to use the dipstick.
