Big End Failing!!

I know this sounds a bit personal, but has anyone had trouble with their big ends?
I have owned an '05 1200GS for 6 weeks now. Bought private with full Dealer service and it seemed a V. good bike.
But now, about 600 miles later, I have been worried that there has been a noise increase from the motor. Dropped the oil and found a few "bits" in it - which looked to me like big end shells, or parts of. Now really worried I visited the local dealer who confirmed my worse fears - Big end is failing!!
They are going to "investigate". This is the first BMW I have owned, bought just for that fact. "Had just about everything else" and this should be a great all rounder & for trips abroad etc.
As you can imagine I am gutted let alone worried about how much this might cost me. I hope the BMW customer service is feeling generous.
I should have kept my '95 Transalp - smooth as a sewing machine!!

Could Be.

Thats what the dealer said. Very rare occurance apparantly.
Must have been caused by something. We will see - eventually.

I haven't heard of failing big ends anywhere, or on other BM twins. You might just be really unlucky. Maybe they'll agree to a goodwill contribution - got to be worth asking.

Yes - unlucky has also been added to my possible explainations.
I really hope to get this sorted - it's a great bike to ride and I intend to get a lot of use from it!! At 13100 miles on the clock I will definitely be trying for a bit of customer good will.

Did you buy the bike from a BMW dealer with an Approved Used Bike Warranty?..If so,you should be fine.
If it was a private deal,you may still be ok if you can provide evidence of a decent service history.

somebodies done something stupid to that bike in its previous existence. big ends dont fail even on chinese imports these days - the technology of bearing design and lube is just too well established. but try and get someone somwehere to accept responsibility - like the dealer. cos the cost wont be small.

if its failed within 6 weeks from a dealer sale, then its not fit for purpose and its the dealers problem. if its private buy then its down to bmw customer service who are usually quite good.

ther have been a couple of reports on the forums about failed big ends on 1150s.

never heard of it on a 1200.
