Big pile of dogshit

Besides, I think we’re broadening the topic too much. PM should take the bike back and demand proper resolution. I.e different bike, money back or courtesy bike while they investigate fault properly and fix!
I certainly wouldn’t be carrying a jumper pack on a bike that age

@TIJ650 I've never had a single problem using jumper packs on my 2002 Dakar and now 2007 Xcountry-
It will save being stranded but we each are free to make our own choices!!

I actually carry a wee Metzeler jumper I got free with tyres, but that wasn’t my point. I was referring to Pukmeister’s specific problem with a fairly new bike

Gotcha- it's onto the merry go round with BMW then - I'm still waiting for recall work to be done....over 6 months now...
If ever I get another bike, it won't be a bmw (n)

I actually like the R9T (or R12T) cause old air cooled engine, but limited for touring

Some of you really do seem to be slaves to the BMW brand .
Spend around £20k on a bike then be forced to find room in your luggage for a Noco jump starter as you don’t trust the bike to start when out and about .
Sod that !!! Ditch the blinkers and buy a reliable bike - anything Japanese for instance .

I cannot disagree at all
Plenty of great ‘other’ bikes out there

Great. Reliable, mostly, but oh so dull and bland.
The only appealing bikes are European these days.

I have to say the starting issue has caused me several problems, and it’s a joke - a top dollar bike that is fabulous in every way except it won’t start.

It’s an ballache when you’re down at Tesco getting gas, it’s heart in the mouth if you’re going to miss your ferry or shuttle and it’s possibly dangerous in rare cases. But imagine a weekend “adventure” where you’re an hours walk from any help, and after a couple of nights’ camping you can’t go home.

And carrying a starter pack is a solution, that costs more money, space and weight. Given the millions they spent on development, perhaps they should have made the fucking thing work properly without.

Is the German for “wankers” “wichsers”?

As I said earlier, when I'm in the market for a replacement my next bike will be Japanese.

I won't waste my time going begging to Bahnstormer for resolution of the issue, if it was a simple fix it would have been sorted by all the motorrad dealers by now........... A 41 pager on Advrider tells me all I need to know. I'll replace the battery myself (again), at least I won't get stiffed dealer prices for it.

When I spoke to them yesterday I was advised that IF the recovery agent could get the bike to them, they MIGHT be able to slot it in for a diagnostic next week sometime but they are awfully busy (aren't they always?), not the kind of customer service I used to get when they first opened after the former SPC dealership had folded.

Gotta ask, so why the switch to the Austrian, not keen on the 1300?
The 1300 looks like another small step. But it is not a huge step in the direction I want, which is upright and sporty. Twin cylinder preference. Bought a 1290 Superduke R and love it.
KTM have problems too, mostly electrical, any drop in battery performance can cause issues….just like BMW.
I have also owned a KTM in the past which had some issues, but it was 100% reliable. In fact the only motorcycles that have that have let me down were Suzuki(s) and Ducati. GSXr electrics both times, Ducati was down to a five year old battery.

IMO the vast majority of none starts and break downs will always be electrical. Experienced on cars, motorcycles and hobbyist tractors. Connections, batteries, reg/rectifier issues. There, just identified 90% of the problems, and they happen with all makes.

Utter bollox.
Go ride something like a Tracer 9 GT+ and tell me it’s bland.
Certainly has more soul than a modern Boxer which sounds like a water-boarded Massey Ferguson.

My bike does not have a problem starting, it starts just fine. Nor has it "Broken down" as such, until I turned it off to get petrol it was running just fine.

What it doesn't do (along with many owners bikes) is start when hot.

Hand on heart, the thing for me is that to chop the bike in and walk away to something else will leave me with a crushing disappointment that not only did I not fix the bike, but the ownership experience is over after enjoying a string of boxer GS/GSA's which I truly loved to own and ride.

Without a GS/GSA in my life I would not have come on this forum and met so many great people, great ride outs, enjoyed such a craic, gone on tours abroad and for all that I am truly thankful.

Yes I have enjoyed owning and riding other marques too but for me there was always something special about owning a GS.

Did you get how BMW tested for this volt drop at the start relay?? is it as simple as just sticking on a multimeter and starting the bike and seeing if you see a big drop/spike??

Its all on the Advrider thread, some clever American dude tells you where to put the meter ends to do the volt drop test across the relay. If I can find it again I'll put a link up later.

Despite my battery stuggling to restart the hot bike, once jumped I rode just two miles home and the bugger restarted fine, the battery health was fine again on my drop tester, the only warning was a diagnostic cranking test that showed low battery terminal volts measured under cranking.

Either the starter motor is drawing excessive amps when hot (eg valve decompressor fault, earth leakage fault through starter motor, starter mechanical issue etc), the volt drop across the starter relay is excessive, or the battery is incapable or providing sustained power despite passing a drop test under load.

Ah, the exciting looking Yamaha…with how much torque? I dont own a GS any longer, or a Tracer thing.
bollox back.:blast
Let me guess, you have Tracer thing?

Sounds like a (re) starting problem to me..
