My money’s on starter, relay or cabling. If any terminal is slightly loose - this could be problem. Like I said, my first step would’ve been to remove all the possible culprits and clean with GT85 or somethingThanks Victor, I think my issue is cam timing/valve
clearance/decompressor related, or perhaps cam wear. I will replace the starter stuff and if it continues to play up I will ask for the valve gear to be checked out.
I bought the bike approved used from BMW with 16,000 miles on it. It is very clattery, the dealer said “they all do that Sir”. It now has 19,000 miles.
As an aside, I stalled it pulling away from cold a couple of days ago and on restarting, it made a horrible metallic bang like a kick back, it’s never done that before.
Btw, don’t know if any of you guys owned an early YZ426?? It was the first proper banzai 4 stroke that transitioned many crossers from 2 to 4 stroke. Many called it a 3 stroke even. Anyway, this MF refused to start when hot!!My money’s on starter, relay or cabling. If any terminal is slightly loose - this could be problem. Good stuffAll starter issues now sorted by replacing the original battery for a Motobatt MHTX16 Hybrid item and replacing the starter relay.
Spins up nicely now.

Indeed, which is why I replaced the starter relay even though the original may be fine. I also have a spare used starter motor from a 2021 bike as a last resort in the garage just in case. The random nature of this `quirk` is what is making a definate solution so difficult to find..
Will be fitting mine just as soon as it arrives so again thank you for spotting in cheaper and saving me £20 oddBatteries seem in short supply at the moment so I ordered from motorworks as they had stock at £144. Had I have realised, I could have ordered from them via their eBay page and saved myself the £7.50 postage charge on top.
Cheapest place I’ve found them since is at motorcycleproducts.co.uk for £121.30 plus £6 delivery.

I used one foam spacer from those provided to pack out the difference in heights so it was a snug fit inside the battery box.
Some slight oxidation had formed on the cable eyes to the relay, easily remedied with a scotch pad and some electrical grease once the cables were replaced and tightened.
I replaced the starter relay for a new item just in case it was part of the problem. I need a reliable bike for touring.

The hybrid is maybe the way forward, but too early to sayBeen reading this thread very closely. I've never had any starting issues but I like the look of this hybrid battery, never heard of them before.
My bike is a 2020 GS with 22k miles. I've no idea how old the battery is but judging by the level of crud all over it it's been in there a while. I've so far never had any issues, hot or cold but I'd rather not wait until an issue arrives and I get caught out. On the other hand, if all is well then why try and fix a problem that isn't there. Yet......
) so if I get two years plus without hassle I'm happy, a standard AGM is about £77 in comparison.I also think its more of a booster addition than a full on lithium battery like yours. As the Motobatt is hybrid, why is the lithium part not damaged by an AGM charger ?
The lithium battery on my Honda warns against doing so.
