Out for a spin tonight just to check things over after fitting new rear disc.
Riding along about 35mph in third and the bike just cuts out, I still had lights indicators, there was no warning signs on the dash.
I pulls over and switched off the ignition and waited a few seconds then switched it back on, it went through its checks and then started not a problem.

Any ideas as to why it might have done this. Have half tank petrol, bike running normal temperature.

It is a 2007 model

thanks spike

Had to go to the dealers tonight to pick up a spare key for the bike, and asked him about it cutting out, he said it does sound like the fuel controler, he had a quick look at the bike and it already has the up graded model on there but I will change it anyways just for piece of mind.

mine did that on the way to abw,i told rudiemoto and he said was you in 3 rd gear when it happend ,yes ,he said they do that sometimes.done 2000 miles since without any probs.:thumb2

2007 model. Five years old.

It's possible that the ignition barrel switches are worn, though that manifests itself usually by a sudden reluctance to start.... ignition lights all on.... but no starter action.

Do you have a bunch of house keys / alarm fob / novelty naked lady key ring from Clacton, on your key.... all jiggling around? If so, you may have found the answer to your problem.....

I do have the alarm fob on the keyring even though the alarm does not work lol,
I Have got a good few months before the trip away in august so plenty miles to see what is going on. Guernsey is not a big place so easy to get home.
The bike always starts first time everytime so no worries on that front (yet).

Strange thing to sometimes happen I must admit, but like said I was in third gear at the time so who knows.
Been out a couple of times since with no problems at all.

Bike died on me again twice tonight and second time it died it really did die, would not start at all.

\Luckily I was 200 yards from home so was able to just push it home and in the garage.
will be ordering a new fuel pump controler tomorrow and making a temperary one with the old one.

That sounds like good idea :rob it will help as soon as you fitted :blagblah

Funnily enough, mine did much the same thing on Friday afternoon, whilst not hanging about heading up the A52 to Nottingham. Had just gone over the M1 junction, when it just went BAAARRRRRRRR...! and nothing.

Turned out my fuel gauge completely lied to me. It was telling me I still had nearly half a tank of fuel, when in reality, there wasn't even any fumes in it.
Bugger.....

Managed to get a mate to come from nearby Long Eaton with a can of juice within about 15 minutes. Thing was, about 8 or 10 bikes passed by (at least 2 Beemer riders) and not one of them stopped to offer any help. :nenau
Whereas, 2 car drivers pulled up to offer their assistance...????

Nothing to do with the original thread I know (other than the cutting out part), just makes you wonder about all this comradeship bo*=+$ks...!

Trouble is though alot of people that ride bikes these days, it is just a mode of tranport, cheaper than a car etc etc. So yes you are right the comrademanship has gone specially if its home time or rush hour.

I am so sorry about your experience , but if I was seeing you on the site of the road I will have more definitely stopped to help out:)

That just what the welsh sheep were saying as I rode past them this weekend !! I didn't stop - hadn't got my wellies on !! :augie

Intermittent failing and cut out = failing FPC IMO.
Do a search on Fuel Pump Controller

2007 1200 GS
A couple of questions - have you had the bike from new?
Do you KNOW what re-calls it has had done?

Get it into your BMW dealer
Ring antennae - liable to fail
FPC - will fail
Braided Brake hoses replacement recall

Your next problem will be a battery failure so change it now. :aidan

My 2008 cut out a couple of times in 6k, then after the 12k service it cut out twice on a day, just before I was going on Holiday, the dealer reckoned it was unlikely to be the FPC (carry a spare anyway)

I then did 3,000 miles on Holiday with no problems, it has since done it twice (over another 2,000 miles)

I think "They all do that sir" may apply, on mine it is always when changing down for a junction / roundabout, I think it may have been going from 3rd to 2nd gear each time - probably just one of them big dustbin pistons missfiring as they are slowing down :nenau

The first couple of times I pulled over to restart, now I have found it will restart on the button - but maybe not fast enough to get out of the way of the big truck bearing down on you as you roll onto a roundabout with no drive

I have been led to believe FPC's just tend to go pop and that's your lot?

There's been quite a few posts over the years about 1200's cutting out on a change down from third to second - my own included. I had it happen at times irrespective of whether I had the OEM headers/rear can or Remus/Akro/accelerator module combination. I then fitted a K&N filter and Iridium plugs so to counteract the lean fueling I also fitted a Wunderlich Power controller - this about 14 months ago. Since then it has never cutout. Except when I took the baffle out on one trip - died at least a dozen times. Put the baffle back in and alls well. Might be co-incidence or might be something deep in the fuelling.
