bike cuts out when side stand is down

guys.
no I'm not loosing the plot, I know the bike has a safety switch on the sidestand.

here is my problem (maybe??) if the bike isnt in gear & the green neutral light is on , if I drop the side stand the bike sometimes stutters & sometimes dies right away. I know it should cut the motor if I put it in gear with the sidestand down but its doing without being in gear. Does it mean something is about to let go & leave me stranded ???
When it engages a gear the green neutral light does out & doesnt flicker or play up at all if that helps with diagnosing my problem.

I'm worried a relay is a bit iffy & about to pack up & leave me stuck at the side of the road?
any ideas on what to do is as allways welcome

Could still be the side stand switch shorting across its terminals through the wiper.
They get my goat when they start playing up: all sorts of diagnostics can be done before a simple replacement of your mentioned suspect component sorts the problem. This statement refers to many bikes and not speciifcally your GS.

Could just be that there is a load of muck on the side stand switch. Try giving it a clean and that might do the trick before you spend ages or money on resolving.

Don't they all do that? Doesn't matter if its in gear or not, the side stand kills the engine. Its to stop the left cylinder getting flooded with oil, or the right cyl running dry. Thats what I was told anyway.

No - 1100s and 850s do, 1150s don't. 1150s will run happily on the sidestand.

Rubbish! If that was the case then they'd have done the same on the 1150s and 1200s.

As I said, it was something I'd been told, not sure where from now.
So why do they do it on the 1100 and 850 then? Cos I do find it a pain in the arse at times, especially on rideouts when I'm dropped off on a junction and I can't drop the bike onto the stand like I can with my Bird, whilst waiting for the group to all come by.

mine had been doing that for a year.[pain in the arse]
new sidestand switch fitted by steptoe and now sorted [1150 single spark]
now ticks over on sidestand again

No - 1100s and 850s do, .

Mine doesn't. Little bit of earth cable from some 20amp T and E shorts it out nicely.
