On a bike... somewhere!
Had a strange one yesterday. I stopped the bike to go into a shop. When I came back out I hit the ignition button and the bike was completely dead (keyless)
I normally carry the key in my beast pocket so I took it out and held it close to the bike... Still nothing... Held it under the wheel arch... Still nothing... No light on the dash... Nothing... As if the battery was disconnected.

Called a mate who said he'd come over in his van to pick it up, so went off and grabbed a coffee and made a few calls.

Mate arrived about an hour later and was just about to load the bike up but thought I would try one more time...
The bike came to life and started no problem. Turned it off and restarted several times. Battery pulling away fine. Battery voltage up to 13.6v...

Rode home and bike starting again no problem.. Battery voltage on the ride hlme was above 14v

Lithium battery and its a 2019 adv

Anyone any thoughts?

Curious. It doesn’t sound like a hardware issue with battery, starter or wiring as they don’t generally cure themselves.

Could be a key issue, or firmware on the bike, or antenna on bike perhaps, but it’s not obvious why these should give an intermittent problem either.

Was there a massive source of RF interference locally? Someone welding, for example?

Side stand fully up, or faulty side stand switch are a possible causes, also you could check the battery terminals.

Just seen a post by Robstaff posted yesterday in this section, it might give you an insight into your problem.

Search “battery” in the LC section there has been a few threads on this issue . It didn’t pay too much attention to the fix because I own a Honda...

Could be phone mast near bye causing problem. Pushed someone’s car away from one and car started ok. Just a thought.

Does the bike have an immobiliser that could have been triggered ?

Thanks for all the suggestions...

I doubt if it's side stand etc as dash didn't light up.
Checked battery terminals later and they were good.
Immobiliser is bmw but I noticed no red light on the dash.

It was Saturday so all business were closed plus I regularly park in the same place so it could be RF but unlikely.

One thing I noticed.. The reason I tried it again is that when we were about to load up the bike beeped ( the way it does when it is arming or disarming the alarm)
I'll browse through the other threads mentioned

I had the battery problem which let me down on 2 occasions and it was subsequently changed under warranty.

But this post reminded me of early symptoms. Hit the start button and nothing. Ignition off, ignition on and hit the start button again and it fires up.

I didn't realise it was a Lithium issue. I do know that in cold winter Lithium batteries often don't crank out enough power when you first turn the starter on , they have to be kind of 'warmed' up. It's best to turnover the starter for a few seconds and then wait for 1/2 a minute and then try again. I don't think it makes a difference whether you turn off the ignition or not in between.
