bike fecked

riding back from wales today,just about to overtake and the bike died.fuel in tank,bike turns over but does not start. 06 gs 1200,13k miles with full bmw service history.any suggestions gratefully received,before i go back to hondas. thanks j

Fuel pump controller. If you want to confirm this, turn on the ignition and listen for the pump. You could also pull an injector out of one of the throttle bodies and check to see if it's squirting petrol when you spin the engine on the starter. I suspect it isn't.

Jim, I carry a spare after I heard all the stories of failures.

I bought one in 2007 but it's still in it's box unopened. When we rode to Rome last year Flash Of The Gap had a failure but Gippo also had a spare & replaced it for him.

They're probably about £60 now but only take a few minutes to change.

Hope it's nothing more than that. Did you get home OK?

mine went last month. don't take it to the dealers if its out of warranty, i got stung 190 quid for what is a 60 quid part and a 20 minute fix...i found out too late

you'd think the dealer would repair it foc after all the grief these things cause. I also carry a spare just in case.

Don't bin the faulty part either without first cutting off the blue wiring connector.

You can use it to make yourself a 'get-you-home' lead so that in future you can (temporarily) run the fuel pump direct from the battery to restart the bike and get you home.

Failing that, you can offer it on here for anyone that would like to make their own.

I have one, I usually carry it wherever I go in case I or a fellow 1200 rider needs to use it.

Not too expensive - although I carry a spare FPC.

Don't bother buying the item with a BMW accessory socket DIN plug on it. The accessory socket will trip out after about 20 seconds.

You need a cable with ring terminals so it can go straight onto the battery to run the fuel pump.

New one. Its burnt out inside.

The new ones apparently are black and better. The advice seems to be don't seal that plastic lid as it'll overheat.

New owners who are unaware of this faulty design can check for water pooling as follows:

Remove l/h (clutch side) plastic tank panel.

Remove the round black plastic cover (lever it off with a screwdriver)
& there it is!

The photo above has the camera looking directly DOWN so as you can see, once water gets in there's no way for it to get out so it just sits there & eventually gets to the electrickery bits.

Early bikes had a problem with the sealing gasket - this was dealt with by a recall; how many recent failures are caused by water ingress into the well?

People who have opened up failed units have found burnt out electronics. The later units are black - this all surely points to overheating.

Corrosion of the cooling fins will cause a reduction in the efficiency of the heatsink - keep then clean and use an anticorrosion product.

Smear the saeling ring and the FPC in Vaseline: Cheap, waterproof and doesn't glue it all together like silicone bathroom sealant does so you can fix it at the roadside easily in future if necessary.

Been reading this and have just gone down the shed and sprayed mine with
ACF 50.
But think Ill get a spare as well.
