Most posts seem to be about bike security parked at home. However what a faff when away. All I've ever used is a disc lock on tour, so I thought I'd better do something about the lift and away opportunists. And this post is about that rather than the professional thieves.

So with a bit of research I find the rear hub best place to lock bike and definitely not the wheel or the frame as bike spares are easier to flog anyway. Ok what I need is a cable, but that really is easy pickings for a moron with simple hand wire cutters. Right so I need a chain that's just long enough and just light enough. So what I need is an 8mm chain with a loop link on the end (then you don't need as much chain) about 1m long that I can thread around 'whatever' then push through the hub with a lock on the end bigger than the 55mm hub diameter so it won't push through.

Can I find one..can I ***k.

And before you tell me I need an 'Anti pinch pin' from pragmatis, it's too heavy duty and they also admit they are easier to crack than a fiddly chain. I've searched Abus, Oxford etc and there really doesn't seem to be anything for 'on tour'.

Am I overthinking this, because it is doing my head in. Advice, experience appreciated. Thanks

I tend to carry a short cut down chain and padlock just long enough to lock two bikes front wheels together or the front wheel to a post and a disc lock the main objective is to stop the bike(s) been lifted in to a van easily

Yep, but Front wheel is a synch to drop out and the rest of your bike is in the van before you know it.

Its a balance between convenience weight and security if they need to remove the from wheel it will take longer than a bike with just a disc lock to lift in a van and manhandling a bike with one wheel is harder than a bike just with the steering lock on how far do you go if they want it they will have it and thats what insurance is for

I use the Pragmasis 19mm chain with the loop link, threaded through the hub with a squire lock. You just need to get four more links than you need then you fold the chain back on itself, push the end link through a link, then put the lock on. Impossible to pull through hub.

How about a heavy duty padlock on the end of the chain?
Won't go through the hole in the hub, and you'll only be carrying the chain and say two padlocks??

I normally take 2 oxford thick cable s with loops that come with a small D lock,
Allways secure bike to solid object , and lock bikes to each other, they fit through the drive hole with a squeeze,
Probbably not that impervious but seem to do the job,, as they look chunky,
Serious thieves will get through anything, mine is the easy carry visible deterrent,
I suppose i will only know how good when the bike is gone ,
its worked for a few years abroad ,
Roamer,

Interesting, but do you loop the other end around something and use another padlock?

Just watched their helpful video but the chappie said that inserting a link through another can't be done with the 19mm chain.

your likely riding a GS, with the capacity to lug anything, so get a ABUS Granite Extreme, i travel with mine ratchet strapped to the rear seat...

How about a system to lock the centre stand down. Can't be too difficult to achieve though having to grovel under bike to attach might be awkward.

Linked through your front wheel?

19mm chain on tour though? Good for the garage admittedly.

Thought about that, even using my current disk lock as one of the padlocks, but there must be a loop chain of about 1.1 - 1.2m out there. Then I just need one padlock. Less fuss, less weight.

Sure this has been mentioned before in an old post. Must be easy to build in at manufacture. Seems a rather good and simple (cheap) idea.

Yes I know they can still lift it, but it is the opportunist we are trying to stop. If they are pros (or inside job- communal garage post) not a lot you can do.

Since someone mentioned this before I always chain front wheel to centre stand when overnight as chain is long enough .

Dunno where you lot go for your holidays'n tours but I've never bothered in over thirty years of continental motorcycle touring ... and never had a problem :D

In 'suspect' areas like Russia the hotels have been more than willing to let me put the 'bike inside the hotel ... where they didn't have an armed (as in guns) secure compound :thumb

Can you tell us more please!.......i.e. Where ,how, type of bike, chains locks ect.

Sorry to hear of the loss, it must have fcuked your trip up big style. Bastids.

Totally agree .... bugger :blast

It will be interesting to hear how many have had their bike stolen while on tour. I only know of one personally, my pals in Germany
