Bike lock on tour

So with a bit of research I find the rear hub best place to lock bike and definitely not the wheel or the frame as bike spares are easier to flog anyway. Ok what I need is a cable, but that really is easy pickings for a moron with simple hand wire cutters.

A 2.5m 15mm thick plaited cable with a loop at each end.
It packs up small too.

Mind you, that's part of my home security, I couldn't be arsed with it out on the road. A decent u-lock through the front wheel and be done with it.

Oh, and your last question....... the answer is yes.

Mind you, there's always the worry of your panniers! How are you going to keep them safe?

Interesting, but do you loop the other end around something and use another padlock?

Just watched their helpful video but the chappie said that inserting a link through another can't be done with the 19mm chain.

Doh! My bad. Mine is a 13mm chain, not 19. It has a loop link one end so only need one lock.

Where are you going on holiday? As Micky says, most places are pretty safe, on the continent.

I've just fitted a Roadlok disk lock on the bike. If that doesn't deter them, they can have the bloody thing!

Dunno where you lot go for your holidays'n tours but I've never bothered in over thirty years of continental motorcycle touring ... and never had a problem

In 'suspect' areas like Russia the hotels have been more than willing to let me put the 'bike inside the hotel ... where they didn't have an armed (as in guns) secure compound

I carry a chain & rotating lock in a bag on the pillion seat

Put the chain through the telelever and front wheel if there is no suitable post or railings to attach chain too

Usually opt for a garage if the hotel has one

I work on the 'out of sight and out of mind principle' though

As you say it's never normally a huge problem

The cables i use coil up small and i get a nights sleep,
I try to get secure parking when possible as others,
Never had a problem just feel the presence of a lock might help ,

Yes, take a disc lock as a deterrent, use a garage if the hotel has one, stop worrying and enjoy your trip.

Disc locks make me cringe.

I was at a bike show and advised my mate not to buy one. On our departure we watched a guy on his new Triumph get on his bike, forget to remove his disc lock and ride off. He got about 2ft and his front wheel locked up, he hit the deck, smashed off his brake caliper, broke his front brake lever, gouged his plastics, scuffed his lid and broke off an indicator. My mate was gob smacked and glad he didn't buy one.

To be honest, if someone wants your bike then they'll have it. All you can do is slow them down by inconveniencing them.

The bike mechanics in Halfords tell me they quite often have to cut off cable wires due to lost keys. They use hand wire cutters or a small hack saw, nibbling away at it. Combi locks they can unpick in seconds.

I read you have the armoured one, so gives you more protection but as you say only used at home.

U lock around front wheel. Easiest bit of bike to unscrew.

I have the big heavy chain but you need a trailer to carry it in....I went to a company called Chain and Rope services and asked them what is best.... they said a wire rope is better than a chain as it is harder to cut and flexes if they use bolt crops.... They made me a rope about 4 feet long with loops on both ends.... easy to carry wrapped around top box and easy to fit wherever you choose...it's about 17 MM. thick.... And don't wash ya bike so no one wants to nick it..... Must agree with Micky tho, after a lot of overseas travel I never had a problem... park safe....

Till you've had a bike stolen, security is an inconvenience.

After you've had a bike stolen, security is as fundamental as oil, spark plugs, helmet, petrol...

I'd use multiple measures - something on each wheel (through the rear hub hole, as mentioned) with the bike locked to something other than itself. Without going as far as carrying a 2m Almax 19mm chain, weight/inconvenience would be low of my list of concerns. But then, I've had a bike stolen.

I'm sure many have also read this online - and it makes sense to me - a tatty cover over the bike (in addition to the locks) should be a very good deterrent.

Amazing how people's minds work.

I always camp when I'm in Europe, just tie some fishing line to my bike and then round my finger in the tent at night.

Never had a bite though, not even a nibble.

It used to be used on my bikes before I had a garage.

There are two crush marks on it where croppers were used on it and one cut mark from three separate occasions. I never had a bike stolen though

I bought two of these , really good value, quite heavy but transportable, one through my rear hub, the other through my mates and locked together with a disc lock. Can you tell us more please!.......i.e. Where ,how, type of bike, chains locks ect.

Sorry to hear of the loss, it must have fcuked your trip up big style. Bastids.

Iv posted here previously so don't want to bore anyone.

On honeymoon, drove to Sicily. Bike parked in hotel parking at front in hotel on the street, disc lock was split in a V shape and large cable lock halved, both left as momentos! Alarm must not gave been much of a deterrent either. Bout 5pm in full daylight last September in Syracuse.

Bmw rented a car for me even though they had no obligation to help and flew back to ireland from Palermo. They rented a car for 2 days in Sicily and 2 days in ireland, very helpful I must say.

Halfway through a month long trip. Insurance paid out fro bike, paid off PCP as bike was 8 months old, and bought a 13 Gs.

I like the wire rope idea - much lighter than carrying my chain. I think I'll have to see about buying one too. Thanks for the tip!
