Bike mags take on the Wankpanzer

perhaps Engineer is unaware of the concept of keyless ignition where there is a separate on/off switch, independent of the start/stop switch.

it was the heated grips switch - each press cycled between 3 options - off, toasty & burny

on my R1200RS, it was the LH switchgear that was replaced just before the warranty expired. The info mode toggle switch had become notchy.
My 1250GS is keyless - but in my experience journos often don't know as much as like to think they do.

mine gets sticky now and then but as it’s well out of warranty I just WD40 it and it’s good for another year or two (y)
Beware the WD40 - it perished the waterproof seals on the switches of my first 1200 - I posted a complete disassembly and breakdown of the problem on here with photos years ago.

Apparently it used to be the switch for something else on the 1250.
Strikes me as a big error, redesigning pretty much the whole bike but keeping the crappy old non-backlit switchgear.
Journo reviews already moaning how the switchgear needs to be backlit especially with the left bar being more complicated now with multiple options/selections which are difficult to find in the dark.
That makes sense, a cost saving exercise as much as design - the centre on/off switch on the 'triple clamp' was clearly a more expensive affair.

It might just be that they moved it because there are all those mechanical flexy bits on the top of the headstock now, as the fork stanchions are now fixed solidly at the top

I guess they couldn’t get the big button switch and ring antenna etc in there anymore

I've had 3 GS's since 2015 the latest 1250 which was sold today I had for over 4 years and done 20,000 miles ,never had an issue with switch gear !
You were lucky, my first GS was 2005 and on my 6th 2021 - I'm not complaining, my dealer Balderston/Sycamore have always fixed the issues with no argument. I have averaged around 10,000 miles p.a. since my first so I expect one or two niggles.

Oh god , I have had 2 go on me , first on the beta 1200lc and then the beta 1250 , bugger looks like up up for a hat-trick 🤪with the latest beta banger

My 1250gs did 19000 miles, no problems at all. I should have kept it.
bike was looked after, but not babied.

hope the 1300gs I’m in the market for will be as good……
all bikes can have problems, it’s how the dealers sort it that matters as far as I’m concerned. BMW have always been good at sorting any problems with their bikes imho.

Definitely wait for the ADV version with bigger tank and bigger boxes as 19 liters are a non starter as I ran my 1250 dry at 123 miles…Hopefully it wont get too big though ! A compromise like 24 liters or at least 6 gallons would be the way to go ! Also they need to redo the front as the radar box is where the headlight should be and there should be a sporty looking taillight and not these ugly Harley blinkers…As for the engine put in the old 76 or even 78 mm stroke and raise the rpms by 1000 rpm for 1350 or 1400 cc and finally have enough power to have fun or overtaking briskly fully loaded 2 up ! As for the weight its the same as the 1250 unless you opt for the forged wheels which saves you a few kilos…And the sound they have to redo too because the exhaust should be louder than the mechanical clatter of the engine..Thats about it ! Not sold on the new one so far…Close but no cigar yet…LOL

Yet MCN gave a more balanced review and said the 1300 is not worth the trade up from the 1250. Also Bauer.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't seen it before and it is an accurate reflection of my view. I prefer the 1250.

Crikey that's a lot of switches.

Are we over complicating these newer bikes?

A little off topic here, but when i was at the bike show the other week on the bmw stand, i got talking to one of the reps.

He said that their not expecting the 1300 GSA or 1400 GS however it comes for 2 years!!
:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Of course he said that they want to sell current gsa without massive discounts?

Its pretty obvious BMW selling off the 1250GSA @ 0% financing the R1300GSA will be out for the ‘25 model year…Or if they call it R1400GS please with at least 76 mm stroke for at least 1350 ccm and not calling the destroked 1300 a 1400…155ph/NM and a 30 liter tank…Too big but still better than the puny 19 liter/120 mile range if you make use of all of your 145 horsies most of the time…

After the skim milk 1300 I hope BMW gets it right with the full fat 1400 GSA or even better M1300GS…There is still hope LOL as the old 1250 is still a rideable machine as she proved herself for almost 3 weeks in 🇲🇽👍

Boxerlust is a malware bot sneaked in by the competition;)

Your point Boxer' about the 1250 is valid though (y)
